Guaranteed an oscar

Now this may sound like i good thing, but im not so some. I mean I sure that this is an excellent documentary and Rogert Ebert is a truly fantastic man, but no matter what happens this film will win the oscar for best documentary. I mean a documentary could be realised which changes the way in which they are filmed forever whilst raising some key questions, but it would still lose out to 'life itself' just because of its subject choice.

True, this is quite conceivable.

I don't know, you might be right. But then again, maybe some people in the academy didn't like the way they were criticized. If he was more of a film maker instead of a film critic, then yeah, I'd say it was a shoe in.

He was a very well liked man in Hollywood. He got an In Memoriam nod at the Oscars, despite not being an Academy member. As far as the Academy is concerned, I don't think there is any real opposition.

reply

Very possible. If this wins Best Documentary next year, it hits two birds with one stone: It would the Academy's way to honor Ebert and their way of making up to Steve James for snubbing Hoop Dreams.

I would be ecstatic if 'Life Itself' was even nominated for an Academy Award. But it is far too early to accurately predict its chances.

Saving Mr. Banks was about Walt Disney and it barely got a nomination for music.

This is an interesting point and one worth noting. However - and please correct me if I'm wrong! - Saving Mr Banks was more of a biographical drama. It wouldn't have been nominated in the category of Best Documentary Feature… would it?

I suspect the OP is right. Life Itself at the very least a shoe-in for nominations, and I think it has the potential to win so long as it isn't a complete catastrophe of a film. And that seems unlikely given Steve James' success with Hoop Dreams.

reply

The correct term is "shoo-in," not "shoe-in." Thanks!

I would say it's close to guaranteed for a nomination, but I dunno about a guaranteed win. And from what I've heard this is an excellent documentary, so it may be deserving nonetheless. I'm willing to excuse Oscar bait if it's good.

You've got a good point there, but the year is still young and we don't really know what is still to come. Well I don't anyway.^^

reply

It definitely deserves serious consideration for a nomination.
