Tony- sweetest guy ever in a film?

And I thought Lloyd Dobbler was a dream guy. I found the character of Tony in this film to be so sweet and adorable that I was watching this film thinking the Eilis character is the luckiest girl ever. And then I thought she was a fool for even considering that other guy.

He was adorable! Such a gentleman! Eager to please, eager to make her happy, hard worker, great family values...How could she possibly want more?

reply

Totally agree! He was super lovely, very understanding and supportive of her needs and goals at a time when men didn't recognize women's independence much.

Let's just hope that trollism is a recessive trait - in case you should ever actually get lucky.

It's an oxymoron? A real man would be comfortable with it. Tony seemed like a strong man to me. Because he was respectful and loving towards his woman I guess that shows weakness. If you were smart, you'd use Tony as an example instead of coming across as a little twerp sitting on your computer expressing your anger towards women. Get out of my thread.

I lift.
I dress well.
I smell good.
I am intelligent.
I am handsome.
I have no fears and no insecurities.
Not to mention I am a walking testosterone machine. Women smell that.

When you are like me, you can say anything and get away with it.

My ideas are a little too extreme, and when I speak my mind women and beta men disagree with me. All the time. And with time, men learn to respect me. Women fall in love and beg for sex.

This is the way the world works. I am not going to change myself honey.

Sitting here laughing my ass off.

I thought he was sweet, but he was rather pushy.

In all honesty, the romance in this film was either underwritten or deliberately ambivalent.

Despite the actors' nice chemistry, I was never really sure if Eilis would have settled down with Tony so quickly--and so permanently--had she not been so lonely and unsure of herself in the US. And then, when she went back to Ireland and allowed Jim to court her, it's never quite clear if Eilis is hanging out with him because of "what ifs" or if she could have truly loved him. Being married to Tony forced her to return to Brooklyn. She didn't truly make any decision about her romantic life or her future.

reply

Her return to Brooklyn was more a matter of realizing how petty her small Irish town and her mother were, after getting used to Brooklyn she knew she could never be happy staying in Ireland. Being married to Tony helped her decision.

But what many don't realize, her being Irish Catholic and close friends with the priest, in that time it was considered sinful to be married outside the church, and in fact that civil ceremony wouldn't be recognized by the church. So she could easily have had her marriage to Tony annulled if she had wanted to stay in Ireland.

Was her small Irish town really that petty? The shop owner was gossipy, judgemental, and evil but the rest of the people seemed very sweet and caring.

I thought Tony was adorable, but Jim seemed like a really great guy too. Jim wasn't just appealing because he has a nice house and her Mom liked him. He seemed like a sweet guy who admired everything about Eilis - her education, ambitions, travels. I wanted her to go back to Tony because Tony adored her and they were married, but I felt bad for Jim.

I appreciated that everybody, outside her ex boss, was pretty decent. I liked that she chose Tony out of love and not out of default if Jim would've been a jerk. Much like in real life, many times our relationships and feelings are messy and complicated, making us wonder 'what if' and causing us to constantly doubt our choices--and this film reflected that. Truly, a great movie.

Most Italians (like Tony) were/are Catholic; was it ever stated in the film that he was of another faith? If not, how can you say she married outside the Catholic Church?

reply

Because they had a civil wedding, they didn't get married by a Catholic priest, that is what "marry outside the church" means. Thus the Catholic Church would not recognize that as a valid marriage.

I agree. I didn't like Tony, he rubbed me the wrong way.

reply

I agree. I thought Tony was lovely. He lit up when he looked at her. That's hard to resist. They did a good job of creating the conflict. I liked Jim too and was irritated that she didn't at least mention she had a fella back in the States especially when he started to fall for her. But she was young and in mourning. In the end, I was pleased by her decision.

Thanks for posting. You didn't deserve to be attacked by trolls.

Agreed. That scene where they are on the train or bus talking about going to the movies and offers the two dates (a second one in case the first one is awful) and he keeps looking at her and smiling just melted me.

One thing I don't think they ever had Eilis address was that she "technically" was second choice for Jim. He was engaged to another girl before Eilis left for America. For one reason or another he broke up the engagement and now was after Eilis, maybe because she was the nicest girl available after Nancy. Why did she not go after her when she was working at the creamery? Was she not good enough then?

reply

He was a doll for sure!

reply

Tony for me, all the way. Jim was super dull.

reply

Jim was a nice man, but a bit dull. He looked to Eilis to liven up his life. Tony livened up Eilis's life, brought out her personality. He was also turning his dreams into reality. Another plus is a nice, close, extended family that appeared to be loving and optimistic. Eilis only had a mother left, and was otherwise alone.

reply

He really is. I kept saying 'I love this guy!' over and over to the tv. He was absolutely adorable. What great performances in one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I wanted two more hours. I need to know if her mom came to live with them. I want to know what their house looked like...and their kids. Love, love, love this movie!!!

Tony was the cutest, most charming, considerate male character I've seen in films for quite awhile. He so resonates with me that I'm ready to leave my husband and move to Long Island to live with Tony. What a doll!
