Joel McHale
Is he his typical sarcastic humor guy or does he actually have a serious side to him for this movie??

sharei love Joel but i thought he would pull me out of the movie or make his usual jokey jokes but he was actually pretty decent in this. he didn't hamm it up.
shareI liked him in this movie. Thought he did a great job and even though I still see him as Jeff from Community he did great in this. He was a great match up with Bana.

I thought McHale did a good job and he provided some much needed comic relief. He plays it straight mostly but does get a few good wisecracks.
I don't see how his humour can ruin the levity of the film. His role provides some levity which the film wouldn't have had otherwise.
Yeah, he only has a few comical lines that are ealistic for a cop with a sense of humor, but his character was portrayed as a real cop. Ir took me a while to place him too. I always liked him but thought he was too goofy and soft. But he was downright sexy in this movie. I'll never see him the same. He should give up suits for T-shirts.
I don't even mind the backwards cap. He is supposed to be slightly douchebaggy after all. Lol
I thought he was pretty badass. :D
shareI found him annoying in this
shareAgree. I've always liked McHale, but he was really irritating in this. And gave a really hammy performance. For example, when he and Eric Bana were watching the surveillance video from the zoo, McHale turns to Bana and says in the worst New York accent "Hey, yuu o.k.!?". This wasn't a great film to begin with, but McHale's smart ass and smug character did not fit in (IMO).
shareI loved that he was the fun guy here. Because it really is impossible to take him seriously.
He tried to be serious in The X Files, and it was truly pathetic. I couldn't believe his character.
Joels "Butler" character was written especially for him by the producer / director who is a personal friend of McHale. He basically wrote the part to mirror McHales presonality.
EDIT
Just found this quote "The role of Butler was always written with Joel McHale in mind, however, Butler was "the worst character in the script", according to the director and writer. After struggling to improve the role, he then imagined what he thought McHale would be like if he had gone to the Army instead of college, and worked in law enforcement instead of entertainment. After that, writing became easier and the character grew."
