How Scary Is This Film?

I'm thinking about showing this to my partner, who doesn't like jump scares much. Does this film have any? Otherwise, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being The Exorcist)how scary is it? I'm ok with mild horror (The Devil, Let The Right One In) but dislike gore. Thanks in advance :)

reply

I personally found it really scary, but it sort of jumps genres. The scariest vampire flick I've ever seen for sure though. I watched it after It Follows and found it to be a lot better and more memorable.

reply

Not scary at all. It's been months since I've seen this, but from what I remember there is a bit of gore. Maybe a few jump scenes. I walked away with a warm feeling inside. If you are a feminist you will love this spin on vampire lore. I really enjoyed it.

reply

I've seen scarier things fall out of my own backside.

reply

maybe consult a physician about that

reply

I don't know as doctors can do that much about pretentious Iranian films.

Just curious what you meant by "if you are a feminist you will love this"? Does this movie have some underlying feminist message?

reply

Yes. You can enjoy it on its own terms, though, too.

reply

no really for me, it has decent male character, but yeah some males portrayed as bad person
perhaps it looks too feminist in some povs

alright, alright, alright

reply

It's not that there are some bad male characters that make it feminist, it's that the girl kills them for it... You realize feminist is not a bad word? I don't know, I find your comment somewhat puzzling.

reply

if feminism meant murdering men for their transgressions it would be a bad word imo but luckily it doesn't

reply

In this film, yes, that's the feminist slant in a nutshell. It's a VAMPIRE MOVIE, so don't get bent out of shape.

reply

From an interview with Amirpour:

In the movie, the Girl walks around at night and sometimes attacks violent, predatory men. Did you intend it to have feminist themes?

Well, did you interpret it as a feminist movie?

Yeah, I did.

That probably says more about you than it does about me. A film is like a mirror. What I connect with in a movie is my own stuff. So consciously, no. It’s more about how surface are not what they seem. There’s more than meets the eye to people. It’s not just women, it’s everybody. Everybody in the world, in the film, in my mind, is much more than what you see on the surface. All people underneath have strange weird secrets inside and when you get to those things it makes you re-evaluate the outside and re-evaluate your assumptions. That’s what I’m interested. It’s not an -ism. All those things confine your thinking because they tell you, this is what it is, and then it’s done. I think everything just has to be considered in its own individual space and time.

so ... sounds like the connection between feminism and violence is in your head rather than in the film.

reply

LOL, sure. Because it's just a mirror.

You go on feeling self-righteous about your admirable disapproval of Vampire violence. Maybe we'll meet again in a discussion about how it is totally against the law to kill Bill.

reply

i'm not disapproving of movie violence, i just find it a little distressing that so many people find a film feminist on account of that violence.

reply

I think people find it feminist because it's self-evidently feminist.

"Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?"

reply

I agree that it is not scary, but since I just saw, I will also say there is NO gore. There is nothing scary about this movie.

reply

It's on a similar level to Let The Right One In. So hardly scary at all.

reply

Not scary at all. I was falling asleep.

This, although I DID fall asleep half way through. Style over substance is about right.

reply

Haha! Me too! I started the movie last night, but had to pause it b/c I kept falling asleep and rewinding. After a good night's rest, I finished this morning, only minutes ago.

I loved the soundtrack, but didn't really care for the movie. It was similar to "Let the Right One In" or "Let Me In," but the pacing wasn't as good as those movies. Plus, I didn't care for the vampire. I did like Arash though.

reply

Little blood and a couple sudden starts but it was surprisingly UNscary. I'd say a 3 out of 10

reply

I got scared just looking at the poster on Netflix! So it's probably really scary.

What are you, eight years old or something?

reply

Finally saw it, and I'd say it's about a 3 on the scale of The Munsters to The Exorcist. I don't think it was trying to be "scary," so that's not really a failing. It's a modest little indie vampire film, more about atmosphere than anything else. I blind-bought the Blu-ray and was a little let down, yet I can't say I'm unhappy I bought it.

I think the breathless review blurbs like "A modern vampire classic!" and "Righteous, shocking, terrifying, iconic, funny, twistedly romantic and refreshingly unpredictable!" do a disservice to the film. It's not a "WOW!! Let's call our boys over and watch that again RIGHT NOW!" kind of movie. It's more of a "Well, that was pretty cool. I wonder what Amirpour will do next?" joint.

It's not a scary film at all. If you're looking for a horror movie, then you are looking at the wrong place.

reply

My mother-in-law is much more scarier.
