Finally saw it, and I'd say it's about a 3 on the scale of The Munsters to The Exorcist. I don't think it was trying to be "scary," so that's not really a failing. It's a modest little indie vampire film, more about atmosphere than anything else. I blind-bought the Blu-ray and was a little let down, yet I can't say I'm unhappy I bought it.
I think the breathless review blurbs like "A modern vampire classic!" and "Righteous, shocking, terrifying, iconic, funny, twistedly romantic and refreshingly unpredictable!" do a disservice to the film. It's not a "WOW!! Let's call our boys over and watch that again RIGHT NOW!" kind of movie. It's more of a "Well, that was pretty cool. I wonder what Amirpour will do next?" joint.
