The newborn alien mimicking David

After the captain was killed, why did the the alien playfully mimic David like it had human traits? Anybody have any ideas about this. I thought the alien only had one instinct, to kill.

(spoilers)

Remember, prior to this, David comes face-to-face with a six-foot tall deacon-style alien, and it doesn't kill him. Why? First and foremost, it can sense that David is not a living thing. As such, David is neither a food source, nor a potential incubator for new chest bursters.

Also, remember how, later in the film, after the xenomorph gets on board the Covenant, at one point, it uses its second set of jaws to smash a closed-circuit video monitor, thus depriving the crew of the ability to see it?

This implies these aliens are born smart. So much so that they might even be born possessing some of the knowledge their hosts had possessed. How else would a creature with no eyes even understand the concept of a video camera so well that it knows to destroy such a device?

So, the newborn that mimics David might naturally have been curious about him, once it determined he was not food or breeding stock.

Just as the previous deacon-style alien was curious about David.

In fact, the newborn might even have been curious enough, and intelligent enough, that it would attempt to mimic David, as a first step toward learning to communicate with him.

"So, the newborn that mimics David might naturally have been curious about him, once it determined he was not food or breeding stock."

Good point. The fact that he is not human gives him a way of learning more about this deadly species.

Didn't David say that he discovered that by blowing into their nostrils they would freeze and that he would have total command over them, or something like that? So obviously, he had done that to all his new 'creations' and so they knew he was their 'superior', maybe like a 'father'.

reply

Yeah, this was interesting, and definitely introduced a new concept to the series.

reply

he was reciting a human quote about breathing into a horse's nose to bond with them.
It was just an allegory to him trying to bond with the aliens, but I don't think he literally breathed into their nose.

reply

Maybe you are right, but I'm pretty sure he said 'I found that by breathing into it's nose...' Would have to watch again to confirm though.

reply

He did say that but it's a quote from a book or something, he liked to quote a lot of poetry and literature. But he gets his poets mixed up. bad robot!
So when he says I, he doesn't mean him. he's probably never seen a horse (which is what the original quote is about).

reply

Yeah could be.

That's another thing that made me roll my eyes, David mixing up poets. Like seriously? lol

reply

It was implied that if an android gets one thing wrong, the rest of their programming can mess up somehow. Chain reaction? I dunno. Like the poet mistake would somehow symbolize how he turned evil.

reply

Yes, but what a dumb way to symbolise evil...by getting your Byron and Shelley mixed up! Oh shoot! lol

reply

In a person it would be no big deal but supposedly in an Android that is a signal to send them back to the shop for reprogramming because there might be more glitches like becoming a creepy mad scientist.
bad robot!

reply

It's ironic that the more human he became, the more 'imperfect' he became, the more evil he became too.

reply

I don't understand this. Why didn't the chestburster come out looking like the ones from alien 1977. Are we supposed to believe they took a step backwards in evolution ove the next decades? Why introduce such an inconsistency when there are a million other jumps the audience is taking

reply

I haven't seen A:C yet but the events of Prometheus take place before the events of Alien.

reply

Yeah. I know. So why would they take a step back in evolution. If you haven't seen the movie you won't understand. The aliens david created in this movie are higher evolved than the ones in 1977 alien. They come out the chest fuller formed

reply

Ah I misread my apologies.
