I had great hopes for this series, Gillian Anderson playing detective again! but I am really disappointed.
It started really good but then I noticed one after another male character was portrayed either as a incompetent loser or a corrupt wife beating cheater, there's no middle ground for males in this series and on the other hand almost all female characters are hardworking and successful smart women, even the cheating wife of that dead cop was portrayed as a victim. It reminded me of the book, "The girl with the dragon tattoo" every male character in that book was a either a corrupt womanizer or a loser.
Women in UK are far better protected than anywhere else, this Show could've been better without feminism's victim complex and whining, it destroyed the police work and the drama it's all about feminism and somehow the writer think a promiscuous female cop is going to help women.
See, now you're just sounding like a classic misogynistic a-hole. Get over yourself. Just because women want, oh I don't know, the same amount of pay a guy gets for the same work or to stop being seen as something just to have sex with doesn't mean they're trying to be your master or control you. Grow up and look at the bigger picture here.
Yes, women do want to have control. 90% of people talking about equality in fact want domination or at least special rights. Guess what, women are also people. So most of them want special rights, and they already got them in some cases, while the militant feminist fringe wants outright domination, and ideally, a world without men. A series portraying men in exclusively negative light and women in exclusively positive light obviously doesn't stand for equality. It' s outright propaganda. And if you think men wouldn't object to a series in which the situation was reversed, if there ever was one, obviously you don't want equality either.
You're obviously just a delusional MRA who wants to keep women in their place. Let me guess, you think women belong in the kitchen making you sandwiches. TV shows aren't real life so you can stop worrying about it. But women still have to worry about walking alone at night. And "A world without men"? Is that why women are still hanging out with men and getting married? Like I said, delusional. It's easy for you to bring up equality when the world is run by a patriarchy and you'd like to keep it that way.
Militant feminists are most definitely not getting married, at least not to men, and they're not hanging out with them a lot, either. If you're not aware of what militant feminist means, maybe you should look it up somewhere before accusing people of being delusional. And yes, I'd much rather stay living in the world where my gender is dominant then simply accept being dominated by another gender. Who wouldn't? Do you really expect men to give up their dominant position and accept a submissive one? Who in their right mind would do that? Be it male, female, transsexual or any of the other 50 gender options that have become available of lately...
Congratulations, MRA's have a term for women standing up for their rights, good for you. Who cares if they aren't marrying, that's their choice. But because few out of many women decide to do that isn't threatening you're existence. *ahem*, still delusional. Sure, they're some extremists, but that doesn't change the fact that women are being oppressed in society. Seriously, what is you're point in arguing with me about women's rights? Just to get another "I win" notch on your belt? Being drunk on you're own privilege is not cute. Thanks for reassuring me that there's still disgusting men out there, you're a real winner.
There are also a lot of men being oppressed, so? Some even by women, especially in working environment. So? Yeah, but being a woman oppressed by a man is special. How? Oppression is oppression, no matter who does it to whom. But you want to be special. You want special rights, just like I said.
And how did you forget? All men are disgusting. According to the series we're talking about. And you're defending it. That's how all this started. Remember?
I wasn't defending the series. I was asking the OP a question that might have him reflect on how he reacted to it. Would he have called out misogyny if it was the other way around? Likely not. I never said the series wasn't like that. I never said men never felt oppressed. Women are more oppressed though. Do men walk at night alone in fear of a rapist? Do they feel uneasy when women cat call them on the streets? Are men more oppressed in the work environment, really? Is making more money than women at work too hard for you to handle? You need to look up your facts, bud and stop making them up just to get an imaginary point in. They're not "special rights", they're rights, period. Listen, you're not going to change how I feel about women's rights because I'm a women and you're not going to change because you're stuck on your high horse so I'm done arguing with you. Have fun being "dominant" until the women take over and wipe all the men off the earth. Har har.
Well, you were in fact being a smug jerk (just like I said) so you're point is pretty invalid and just furthers the proof of how much of a vapid piece of *beep* you are.
Are you still beating this dead horse? What is this even about anymore? I've already proven how misogynistic you are (which is all I cared about doing) and you've never denied it, so it's over. This has just boiled down to petty *beep* with you now.
There's nothing petty in being right, but how would you know. :))))
Since your superior female brain has managed to forget what we're talking about, I'll remind you. You want special rights, but you won't get them! :) If you're so superior, why do you need to ask for them at all?
Jesus christ dude, this has nothing to do with being special so you can get over that notion and shove your smiley faces up your ass. Standing up for your basic human rights doesn't make someone special or superior. What makes you so *beep* special that you get the world basically catered to you. What makes you so special that you get to tell women what they can and can't do? Guess what, you're just an everyday piece of *beep* that can only pick fights on the internet. If you think treating women like *beep* based on their gender makes you right then you're just part of the problem and I don't have time for your male tears. Obviously someone got put in the friendzone too many times and is butthurt over it. It's actually pretty sad how men act when their masculinity is threatened. Poor little guys, must be hard when women get tired of their dumb *beep* And when did I say anything about being superior? Now you're just making things up and it's pretty pathetic.
Ha ha ha. Yeah those independent women are so threatening. Well, maybe they're not but you don't know what else to say, so you're repeating it over and over again.
And what basic human rights? Who ever said anything about basic human rights? This show is portraying women as all good, and men as all evil. And you're defending it. Because you agree with it. Well if you agree with it, you cannot want equality. How can you want equality, if all men are pigs? Surely you're better than pigs.
Do you understand now, female? Or it still does not compute? Of course it does not. Now please tell me some more about how I'm threatened by an old hag screwing younger men (and she didn't look a lot better 20 years ago in X-files either).
Oh, are we actually discussing the show now? You turned this into an argument over feminists and strayed away from discussing the show so that's on you. Did I say all men were pigs? Here we go again with your imagination. You really need to get a life. Calling Gillian Anderson's character an old hag now? I bet the women just swoon over your charming personality.
I turned it into discussion about feminism? Do you see the subject of the thread you're posting to? Do you need it explained? Again?
If you don't think all men are pigs, you cannot defend the show. Because the show portrays men as such. Is that simple enough for you? Do you get it now?
You weren't even talking about feminism on the show (which is what the thread is about). You said some dumb remark about a feminism pamphlet. You didn't even have intentions to discuss the show, you just wanted to be a smartass. But sure, bring up the show when it's convenient for you. And When did I ever defend the show? Didn't we go through this already? No wonder I have to repeat myself. When will you get it through you're thick head that I will always see through your BS. Do you get that now?
Wow, where have I even stated that I was a feminist in the first place and also that I didn't like the show? I didn't rate the show a 9 for nothing. And apparently not putting up with male chauvinist crap makes me a feminist in your paranoid eye. Even if I was a "bimbo" (your vocabulary is outstanding by the way) what would that have to do with anything?
How low can you go?
What are you even talking about? I don't want to play the limbo dance with you.

LOL you waited 10 days to reply so your post would be the last. Pathetic. Like everything feminist. So resenting a female character that acts like a male pig is a male chauvinist crap? Of course, since you think you're superior. But guess what, you're not. And squeal all you like, but you'll never be. And you know why? Because all you feminists want to do is impersonate men. It's so pathetic it's sad.
I didn't wait 10 days you loser I was taking a break from this inane conversation. Looks like you waited forever to reply, is that so you could have the last reply? Sounds stupid doesn't it. I wasn't even talking about your view of the female character on the show, I was talking about your chauvinist crap towards women in general. Did I not say I was not a feminist like 100 effing times already. Get over that sh!t, seriously because it's getting old. Blah blah, you don't like feminists, tell me something I haven't heard from you already. Did I say I thought was superior? Jesus, you have problems dude. Why would I want to "impersonate" men? What are you even on about, I'm pretty content not being a dude. Seriously, F&#ck-off and go back to la la land.
Oh you jumped so gladly back to this inane conversation. :) And it is getting old? Tell me I'm afraid of independent women, for some novelty, why don't you? So you gave a 9 to a show that portrays all male characters as negative, and all female characters as positive. Only a militant feminist could take that crap. Get it? If you like this show you are a feminist. A militant one. Get it? Because only a militant feminist can eat that up. (I'm saying this for tenth time and you still don't get it, a further proof you're a feminist.)
To top it off, the lead character is a female behaving like a male pig. An ideal of all feminists. And you're defending her, too. At the same time youre BS-ing about basic human rights and equal pay. So a basic human right is to be a slut? Knock yourself out.
I don't care if you are or aren't afraid of "independent women". Do you just pull these absurd thoughts out of your a$$ because you don't have anything of substance left to say? It didn't even portray all the men as negative so please, re-watch before making assumptions or do I have to make a list for you. Yeah yeah, militant feminist, blah blah. Obviously you're panties are too much in a twist over feminists to see sh!t clearly, get a ruddy grip.
The lead character is not acting like a pig. She what, slept with a guy? Alert the f&@king media. Slut is just a word for men to use to make women feel shameful about enjoying sex. And you sir (I use that term lightly) can take a running jump, misogynistic pos.
I can't run to my "daddy" for help IF HE'S DEAD... but I digress. I wasn't the one who got your posts deleted, I didn't even get a chance to see what they said. I'm sure they were brilliant though.
I just find this increasingly funny. When a show or movie portraits men as stupid, incompetent or a**holes you get lots of complaints. But all these countless and countless of shows/movies who shows women as bimbos, whores, stupid etc, that is fine.
Same with white/black. Now when we get some movies about slavery and what not a lot of white people feel threatened, but the hundreds of movies in past and present with stereotype often racist portraits of blacks are fine.
I hope the increase in obviously uncomfortable portraits continues, it's fun to see how so many suddenly feel so very threatened, either for their skin color or manhood.
Btw, you ("you" being whoever criticise) often do not even see the whole picture since you get so disturbed by it: There are good men in the Fall. Mitchell is one. Joe, even if corrupt, seemed pretty good. There was this guy who tried to help Annie. But since you feel so threatened you don't even see this. And as for the "Girl with the dragon tattoo", that is written by a man, and yes there was a very good man in those books/movies, the journalist. So untrue as well.
I just find this increasingly funny. When a show or movie portraits men as stupid, incompetent or a**holes you get lots of complaints. But all these countless and countless of shows/movies who shows women as bimbos, whores, stupid etc, that is fine.
Who said it's fine? Men can't take offense to perceived negative portrayals without submitting a resume first demonstrating they've been offended by negative female portrayals? And would that even be suffice or would that resume need to tick all the boxes before they're allowed to have an opinion on an issue that they could most relate to? BTW, where's your resume of speaking out against every conceivable category before you've shared your dismissive opinion here?
I hope the increase in obviously uncomfortable portraits continues
Says it all.
it's fun to see how so many suddenly feel so very threatened
There were two used condoms in her hotel bathroom so having sex twice in 5 episodes makes her promiscuous?
Having sex with multiple partner is promiscuous.
I suggest you spend more time polishing your English language skills and less time worrying about feminism.
Awww sweet! you are enlightened one right! I am accessing this site from a country where we speak a different language. You can do that with the help of internet. Thank you for suggestion anyway!!!

Oh no, a women having sex with multiple partners? The atrocity! But you wouldn't have a problem with a dude having multiple partners. Also, in your original post:
some how the writer think a promiscuous female cop is going to help women
How would a woman's sex life affect her ability to help women?
reply share
Where did I say that it's ok for men to have multiple partner?
The fact that you're talking about the lead women on the show having sex but not the men (or man? I'd have to watch again) that are having sex with her says it already.
Beside the point I am talking about show not about women.
What? You're talking about the women on the show, yeah? And in you're first post you said:
some how the writer think a promiscuous female cop is going to help women
You said it, not me. And I wanted to know why you thought the female cop wouldn't be able to help the women on the show just because she's allegedly "promiscuous".

What lies...all you've talked about on here is women...'oh and they whine about wanting equal rights'...that has NOTHING to do with the show now does it. Try using the head on your shoulders to think with occasionally instead of some other body part.
The onus is on you to defend your statement; not on me to rebut it.
Ok, how about divorce settlements? so many women in UK earn so much money without working for a single penny, how shameless and disgusting it is. Shame on them at least prostitutes work for living.
That's hilarious that you were so offended that you rated the show a 1. I hope there's more shows like this to offend your manly sensibilities in the future
No, of course you're not. That's why your entire agenda, purpose and theory is aimed at emulating men. And not any men, but male pigs, which you supposedly hate, but in fact idolize and worship. But guess what? You won't get them. Ever. They want bimbos, not you. You will get submissive males that you despise, because only they will have you. And then you will hate them for wanting you, yourself for being with them, and the pigs for not wanting you. Frustration is an ugly beast.
And that, my friends, is how "feminism" perpetuates itself.
So I "idolize" men? You think I want to be with a man? Wow, it's kind of like you don't know me at all... oh yeah, because you don't. Hate to burst your bubble but some womens lives don't revolve around men. Making assumptions about people over the interwebs isn't your strong suit. But, whatever helps you sleep at night, buddy
I couldn't care less about you, or your not understanding of the word emulate.
If you're a feminist, you idolize male pigs. That's what they do. They want to be men. And not any men. But the kind that "oppressed them since times immemorial". The reason is that they cannot accept the fact they want to be dominated. That's what breeds "feminism".
On the other hand, there is a small number of truly dominant women, who accept the fact that they're dominant, and by it the fact that they can attract only submissive men. But be sure you won't find them bitching about issues. They're busy living happily. Just as those women who are submissive and have dominant men.
Only the female minority that both wants to be dominant and dominated at the same time is causing trouble, poisoning the male-female relations. Yup, frustration is an ugly beast.
If you don't care then stop making assumptions about me. Better yet, stop replying to my messages. I don't have to be a feminist to not want to put up with your *beep* I'm not even talking about feminism so go the *beep* away with your spouts of propoganda *beep* I don't care how you feel about it or you're outstanding insight into how feminists feel.
But you'd be happy to hurt some more manly sensibility in the future, right?
Why is that? Why do you care? Why do you bother? You don't even want to be with a man, like you also said. Why not just ignore them? Because you're attracted by dominant men and you hate yourself for it. Just like all feminists.
I believe she simply means "offends" as in upsets the status quo. Change occurs when you ruffle feathers. Also, when you state that some feminists want to be dominated. I think you misunderstand that these particular women don't want yo be dominated. However there is most likely a struggle that takes place where they want love and want a man. However, they may have been raised to believe that in order to have a man's love, they must be submissive. Yet they don't possess a submissive personality. I think a lot of women struggle with this. The problem is not that the woman has a dominate personality, it is simply that her personality isn't socially acceptable. The women you mention who are dominant and are happy, simply don't care that their dominating personality isn't considered acceptable.
Not every man on this show is portrayed as weak. I forget his name, but the internal affairs Chief Inspector who went after the partner of Sergeant Olson was not portrayed as weak. Neither was the fat plainclothes detective working with Gibson.
Also, the loyalist paramilitaries who threatened Spector were not portrayed as weak.
Benoit killed 2x as many w/o a gun than Belcher did with one/S&W fighting climate change since 1852
It started really good but then I noticed one after another male character was portrayed either as a incompetent loser or a corrupt wife beating cheater, there's no middle ground for males in this series and on the other hand almost all female characters are hardworking and successful smart women, even the cheating wife of that dead cop was portrayed as a victim. It reminded me of the book, "The girl with the dragon tattoo" every male character in that book was a either a corrupt womanizer or a loser.
As a male, I had absolutely no problem with it. I am quite secure in myself and don't need to be defined by my manhood. I find it quite refreshing to see the gender rolls played out in such away.
Women in UK are far better protected than anywhere else, this Show could've been better without feminism's victim complex and whining, it destroyed the police work and the drama it's all about feminism and some how the writer think a promiscuous female cop is going to help women.
While there may be laws in place to protect women, I still feel women are victimized and/or patronized in our society today. Not as blatantly as in the passed past but it still goes on. Sexism is not dead by a long shot. And I find a lot of men seem to be resenting the fact that traditional rolls no longer exists, questioning what it means to be a man in today's times. I think it's more important to spend time considering what it means to be a decent human being in today's times.
But as others pointed out that women, while they're supposed to be strong women, are still portrayed on TV shows as emotionally driven, all wanting a relationship and kids, uses their sexuality to get what they want or is a complete bitch, and those being the only reason they sleep with someone. It's good to see a strong women who doesn't give a f@$k about that s#!t and doesn't rely on her sexuality to get what she wants and gets her job done. She has sex for pleasure, why is that an issue? But for some reason A promiscuous male character is hardly anything to bat an eye lid or merely a charmingly boyish larrikin or a player. I think a woman who isn't portrayed as a "slut" just because she has a lot of casual sex is a big and important step.
Good on the writers, I say.
Life's too short to make others shorter

What an excellent post. Complete with a spirited debate about feminism. However, take note ladies. What the "males" on this board are really saying is that they are afraid. They are afraid that women are no longer taking their crap, washing their underwear, supporting their (men's) dreams whilst denying her own dreams. Women are no longer cooking their meals, raising their kids and being available for free sex whenever men want it. They are afraid of women who own their sexuality and go for what they want. Essentially, men are rapidly losing control and they hate it. They bash feminism because women need feminism. They are attempting to turn feminism into a dirty word by whining about how feminism is mean to men. Especially on this show. Ladies if you think we have no power, pay attention. Observe the rantings of the guys on this board and be sure to read between the lines. You can sense their fear. Confront them but don't expend too much energy trying to change their minds. And most important, don't ever let some loser on any message board on any site manipulate you into denigrating feminism.
They bash feminism because women need feminism. They are attempting to turn feminism into a dirty word by whining about how feminism is mean to men
Is it not? hate men because they have penis. These women earn millions without working for a minute, as I said whores are better at least they are honest.

"(...)it's all about feminism and some how the writer think a promiscuous female cop is going to help women." That right there gave you away. Except for all the whining about competent women and incompetent men, as if it's unheard of in the real world, and with no mention from you of how the opposite has been portrayed in movies and tv-shows for decades and your lack of objections regarding that.
So, do you call/consider male characters/men who have sex 'promiscuous' or are just women with a sex life worthy of being labelled that?
One scene that really sticks out for me is the one where she's being interviewed about the murder of one of the corrupt detectives - the one she slept with.
From the very beginning of that interview she's giving short, curt answers and is pretty contemptuous of the officer investigating, interviewing her.
It's funny - I'm sure she's been on the other side of it so often, you'd think she'd be more willing to offer up information but instead the interviewer has to pry.
And as soon as he starts prying, she starts preparing her rant about how men and women are treated differently and how he's a sexist pig and is judging her in his mind because she knows exactly what he's thinking!
That guy is one of the few male characters where it's not immediately obvious he's corrupt, a criminal or incompetent at his job - and so within seconds the writers of the show label him a sexist with that little rant.
The worst part of all is they've built up this huge backstory (She's apparently some genius who holds a lot of degrees for one) and ignore it in favor of silly little rants like that one.
Instead her character seems pretty pathetic, just less pathetic than all the corrupt cops, incompetent cops surrounding her.
This show is like a The Mentalist/Psych that takes itself too seriously and wants to make some amazing social commentary. The writers are nowhere near skilled enough to pull it off though.
It's funny - I'm sure she's been on the other side of it so often, you'd think she'd be more willing to offer up information but instead the interviewer has to pry.
It's so dumb that these women think it's intelligent to prove all these things to men. As if it's going to change anything.

Honestly you obviously don't know jack about feminism, or what it really means. Here's what the hell it means: fem·i·nism ˈfeməˌnizəm/ noun noun: feminism
the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. synonyms: the women's movement, the feminist movement, women's liberation, female emancipation, women's rights; informalwomen's lib "a longtime advocate of feminism"
Origin late 19th century: from French féminisme . Translate feminism to Use over time for: feminism
Honestly, I'm tired of guys who hate feminism like you always whining about it when you don't understand it or even know what the hell it is. If you don't like the show, just shut up and don't watch it then. I've never seen the show, but I don't get why you see ONE show where you think men are nothing but the bad guys and you start ranting all over this thread about it. Get over yourself, please. It just speaks of insecurity on your part if you're so threatened by the mere showing of a show with a female lead. As a woman, I love seeing shows like that. So step off with your whiny nonsense. Also, feminism has already changed the world over the last 130 years or so, so youre way behind on that.
Yeah, that bothered me immensely about this show too. In fact, so much, that I have no desire to watch the second season. I liked the show for the setting in NI, as well as the different take at the whole Serial Killer cat & mouse game. This time, we are actually presented an assassin that feels like a real human being (and not a walking stereotype) that is 3 dimensional and has a regular life.
But the whole feminist agenda is so obvious and distracting, that it ruins the whole experience.
I´m also baffled that so many seem to take Gillian Anderson´s (clearly flawed) character as some sort of role model, just because she is smart and *beep* whoever she wants?!? It´s kind of childish. I agree with the other posters that she seems kind of autistic. And just to be clear, I wouldn´t consider Gibson´s character cool or even interesting, if she was a man. In fact, he would would still seem arrogant and blabbering idiot with no regard to the people around him, to me.
If you think about it, the show is actually quite anti-women while trying to be very pro-women.
One scene we have women touted as being emotionally and spiritually stronger than men (ha), then we have it laid out that apparently men are defects (again, ha) and after that scene, we move on to a young girl doing the bidding of a killer because she gets wet for him. Brilliant clash.
Apparently the main target group of this show is women with old school feminist ideas. "Woman power rules!" It appears it is politically correct to portray women as geniouses / angels / victims etc and men as total idiots / cruel / immoral etc Political correctness is an ideological plague, promoting pretentiousness and hypocrisy in place of honesty and directness; a plague that I dont't think will last.
Fanboy : a person who does not think while watching.
As a woman of a "certain age" (old) guess I'm alone in not picking up the extensive feminist theme that others have.
The Stella character is an odd duck, but not because she's a woman. She kind of seems to go against the flow of the traditional Met culture. She's like the typical Met UK detective who doesn't go with the flow of the other cops. Like George Gently. Or even Morse.
She's a woman, yes. And as such has female sensibilities. She sleeps with men to satisfy herself because she can. She picks a buff lad up and he does the deed. Then she moves on. She's in a N.I. environment in which getting her needs met by becoming emotionally involved would ruin her authority.
It probably comes off a "feminist" statement, but I think they may be showing her doing that to show that she can get more easily into the mind of the serial killer who has some kind of detachment disorder about women, because she kind of sails above the realm of emotional attachment herself.
It's like person seeking like person--so they put her in situations where she just uses men as objects--like he does. Again perhaps not for a written feminist agenda, but to let her see she's just as cold blooded in her male/female approach as the killer is!
Part of her persona as a Met investigator is to stay apart from all the complicated Belfast police politics. There's nothing worse in Belfast than being an English outsider brought in to judge and investigate the home team.
That's an incendiary scnenario.
There is that broader theme at work here, that US viewers may not immediately twig to.
That PSNI team may be going to be poised to find fault in her any way they can, in spite of John Lynch's protective stance on her behalf.
She's a suspected Met high level inpector brought in to perhaps find fault in a political charged PSNI that is not going to take lightly to her being there--male or female.
The fact that they made her a female inspector is more interesting. The powers that be might try to degrade her efforts by playing the "female card" and she's playing the "feminist card" right back at them to keep her authority in tact. Ergo her reaction when they questioned her about sleeping with the dead detective sergeant.
So it's an indirect feminist play on her part--but it's for a reason. To not let them undermine her--she's a natural enemy of these PSNI guys. Big time.
She's from the MET. She's stepped into a world where the PSNI are trying to keep the lid on things since the Good Friday Agreement and there's a lot going on on their patch. Now they've got a serial killer.
It's complicated.
But I don't see this writing and presention as some kind of feminist themed show. Far from it. Stella's kind of the anti-feminist character.
Very well-written post with a lot of valid points, especially from someone who understands the dynamics of NI police/MET culture. Enjoyed reading it. Thanks.
It probably comes off a "feminist" statement, but I think they may be showing her doing that to show that she can get more easily into the mind of the serial killer who has some kind of detachment disorder about women, because she kind of sails above the realm of emotional attachment herself.

Well said. I tend to roll my eyes when the "feminists" push promiscuity as empowerment but I never took Stella's hookups as any such a statement. I thought it was to demonstrate a serious flaw in the character. I like your reasoning for the flaw.
There is that broader theme at work here, that US viewers may not immediately twig to.
That PSNI team may be going to be poised to find fault in her any way they can, in spite of John Lynch's protective stance on her behalf.
That's how I took the resentment. Similar to when the FBI steps in on a local case.
