It's all about chasing diversity. Only reason they picked the asian actors as the origin of the main character was chasing Chinese viewers. Sadly you'll start seeing more and more of this as China starts to account for more and more of the revenue. The only real question I have is why do we get so many blacks crammed down our throats when they make up such a small portion of the revenue stream.

I agree, especially n the first episode I struggled to understand some of her lines. She is a very irritating 2D character at the moment. Seems like she's just in it for a pretty face and a bit of diversity.

Maybe if I was accustomed to hearing that type of accent (I'm English) but neither I nor my partner could understand some of her lines and we had to 'rewind' it in a few places. Her English isn't bad it just wasn't very clear in some places. Not being able to understand one of the main characters lines isn't exactly nitpicking, its a fair comment/critique from where I'm sitting.

And from the two episodes I did watch, her accent seemed slight to me, not thick (just compare her to someone like Sofia Vergara, or worse yet, Penelope Cruz who was already mentioned on here, and whom I personally don't understand at all). Everyone who has an accent isn't automatically incomprehensible, and there are some native English speaker accents that are a lot harder to understand than hers.

I had no problems with her character or her acting. I had to continuously enable and disable subs during her scenes b/c I couldn't understand what she was saying. Having said that she wasn't the only character I had trouble understanding and I didn't want to miss any dialogue b/c I was really enjoying the show.

If they are indeed trying to create a Blade Runner'esque universe, then diversity is one of the thing they will land on, it's ok by me, refreshing to have diversity in a film/series without emphasizing the differences between race.

And your racism is showing. Were it just the accents, you never have thrown in the "yo quiero Taco Bell" comment. Funny, you don't seem to have a problem with James Purefoy's accent, and those southwestern British accents - with their Welsh influences - can be pretty hard to discern as well.

Yes, exactly what I meant. Even myself, and I'm quite inured to UK accents. I remember especially in Solomon Kane there were definitely "whutwaszathesaid???" moments.
And I live in the deep south in the US, but was born in Brooklyn. Yes, quite often I get blank stares. :-) But I know of one waitress whose southern accent is SO thick, that other southerners don't understand her, either.

Halfway through EP01 and I had to stop and see if anyone else had noticed how awful and wooden she is. Heh, Cabron.
And on a side note, I noticed she and her partner, the Arab Mandy Patinkin, speak to each other in their respective culture's tongues and they seem to understand each other, yet only respond in English. The same device was used in the recent Cloverfield disaster, where Zhang Ziyi spoke Mandarin and no English, yet people spoke English to her and she seemed to understand perfectly. People just don't do that. I love polyglots and hearing languages being mixed in speech, but put in some effort and learn a line or two of another language to at least attempt the illusion. To do it this way is just lazy and dumb.

And using Qi's first name when writing about an actress one admires is quite normal. (DON'T get me started on Lin Chi-ling!) That's called her "jiao." Were I using her whole name, her "xing," I would have written it as you stated, which I did for Zhang Ziyi.

Annoying AF and they spent SOOOO MUUUUUCH time with her especially in the 1st couple of episodes.
Every time they would cut to her it was like I switched the channel accidentally and had to endure a goddamn TELENOVELLA.
