Why did they make the little mormon boys so creepy acting?

In the original they was just normal kids, was good kids handing out flyers. In this they have them acting like The Shining Twins or something blankly staring into peoples souls.

Just felt like they made legit everyone in that town overly creepy and everyone acting creepy for no reason at all. Just felt so phony and forced.

Misdirection how? its not like the two little kids could be The Strangers. Again they made that entire town over the top creepy and weird, no one acted like a normal human being. Subtlety was non existent in this movie.
