Oh, come on...seriously?!

I've talked to quite a few people who have deemed this film as "amazing, one of the best films ever, as good as Full Metal Jacket". And I just can't even fathom how they could make such claims. This movie was terrible. First off, let me just say that I like Andrew Garfield as an actor, but this role definitely wasn't for him. I feel the same way about Vince Vaughn. He's a great actor, but still, the casting choices were awful. And call me a cold hearted unsympathetic monster, but when it comes to a war film, last thing I want to see a film about a soldier who can't fire a weapon. I mean, come on. Give me a break. That plot doesn't exactly intrigue me. And a lot of people told me about the "super intense war scenes". I guess I failed to notice. This is why I don't have a whole lot of faith in war movies these days. They're always so overrated and over-hyped. Am I alone here?

I kept putting off watching this, but I have to say I thought it was overall quite good and certainly up there with good war dramas. My biggest gripe was that the climax seemed extremely rushed and shot really poorly.

I found it absolutely fascinating that most of the events depicted in the film such as not carrying a weapon, refusing to fire a weapon, almost being court martialed because of it, staying on the ridge alone, rescuing around 50 soldiers, lowering them all down by rope, and somehow evading death, among others were all true. I wouldn't say it's great like FMJ or Saving Private Ryan, but I thought it was pretty good.

Mel Gibson is a master Director, this movie is A male and old school. You failed to understand the greatness of the battle scenes...Gibson is a Poet of Violence. He recaptured the realistic intensity of the medieval battles in Braveheart in a WW2 modern warfare scenery and that's hard very hard .The battles are amazing it's like "Saving Private Ryan meets Starship Troopers" but in my opinion these are the best modern warfare battle scenes ever, better and longer than SPR.The first half is a slow burner ok but it is intentionally that way so we can empathise with the heroes, just like the first 20' in Apocalypto. The movie really takes off after boot camp and Okinawa landing. This movie is about standing on your beliefs no matter what,it's about friendship, compassion, true patriotism and it is an atypical Christian story inside the Hell of WW2.Garfield even though he doesn't resemble the real Doss he "became" Doss even Desmond Doss Jr(son of D.Doss) was extremely moved by his performance. The fact that this movie got 6 Oscar noms on major categories and won 2 despite Gibson's bad reputation in Woke Hollywood proves that this one is one of the greatest movies ever and the best War movie ever IMO.

You are not alone. Although I wouldn't call this movie "terrible" I pretty much agree with everything else you wrote. Very mediocre movie and easily Mel Gibson's worst as a director. The true story may have been interesting but this movie isn't. Style over substance.

Vaughn was great in this, the perfect drill sergeant mix of humor and toughness.

And Garfield was even better, showing the quirkiness of Doss, and his faith, and his inner confidence and courage.

i happen to like Hacksaw Ridge its not bad for a World War II flick. the court martial trial gets a little weird where Desmond's father is all dressed up in his uniform from the Great Wear which there's one older man that just happens to recognize the Great War uniform which Desmond got lucky because of that one person.
