The games that this is based off of are brutal but not super graphic stories about people engrossed in a ancient and everlasting war between two factions that both go around killing people they feel need to die for "the greater good". Between that and how well Deadpool did I'm not really concerned that they might have toned it down to 'score' a lower rating, you can get away with a lot of not excessively graphic violence in live action flicks these days.
And while the games are rated "M", ESRB ratings are more unreliable then the MPAA. I've played games that had ratings of "T" and "M" that have been nearly identical content wise but nonetheless found themselves with very different age recommendations.

Even if you manage to play the games in a 'PG rated fashion' (no such thing)...
I'd rather have it be R, but at the same time none of the Assassin's Creed game were extraordinarily violent from what I remembered despite being rated M. It could work as a PG-13, but like I said I'd still prefer an R rating.
shareI think it's fine.
Nothing in the games seems really graphic enough for it to go R. I suppose we won't really have much bloodspatter but I don't think it's really needed.
I expected it and so far the only sign that really isn't in favor of this movie is the fact that it's based on a videogame. But the central concept from the game is interesting enough, and I think they made a smart move by not sticking to any of the narratives from the games but creating a new one. Aside from giving them the freedom to actually create a story that's fitting for a movie and actually what's interesting they can expand on the whole narrative which actually might be more interesting for the people that already are fans and at the same time create a fresh story for the people that aren't familiar with the series.
In my opinion, the whole Assassin's Creed video game series should be re rated to teen cause, if you think about it, the amount of violence and gore is on-par with Blizzard's game Star Craft. Another thing to take into consideration is sure, the people who first played the medium have more games meant for them (thus the restriction of anyone under the age of 17 buying M-rated games,) but that doesn't mean that every game SHOULD be given an M rating. Borderlands and Halo are prime examples of games that should have their ratings lowered, in my opinion.
This principle also applies to movies. Sure, I can see Assassin's Creed being PG-13. I could see the old 2005 movie DOOM being PG-13 (save all the cursing.) Stuff like the uncut versions of SAW and the new Evil Dead are R-rated for sure. The only movies worthy of NC-17 are the original Evil Dead and 100 tears.
In the end, both systems are broken. It all depends on if the person takes it at face value, how much that person can handle at any given time, and the mental maturity of the person viewing the material.
Another thing you have to consider is that movies tend to get a big audience whenever they are either PG or PG-13 (because, you know, they are somewhat kid-friendly.)
To be honest the one reason I'd like to see a lot of movies rated R is to get a whole lot of annoying people out of the room.
Considering the Lord of the Rings is PG-13, I don't think this needs to be any more gory than that.
