Bad. Restricts the movie too much. This is a movie about assassins, not your friendly neighborhood Spider Man.

I agree if they start toning down the movie just to appease some parents that dont want their kids seeing violence or swearing then their kids shouldnt be seeing this movie or playing assassins creed to begin with
just starts losing what its really about then ......
According to the trailer, it's rated for "intense violence".
So it's fine. All the people who want extreme blood and gore seem to forget that Assassin's Creed isn't Gears of War. The AC games have nowhere near enough of the copious amounts of gore that necessitate an R rating these days. They can get away with plenty at PG-13 level.
So was Prince of Persia, The Lone Ranger and The A-Team, just to add a few. Plus there was John Carter, I am Number Four, Battleship and 47 Ronin that all landed the "intense violence" label. That's pretty much the level of violence you're looking at for the Assassin's Creed movie. "intense violence" in the land of PG means nothing. And if you're saying that blood and gore haven't been an integral part of the Assassin's Creed games, then you're way off base. The games are age restricted precisely because of all the blood and gore that they contain.

saying that blood and gore haven't been an integral part of the Assassin's Creed games
It all depends on playstyle, most of time I play, I try to do it sneakily with as few bodies as possible, and the little bit of blood associated with most of the actual assassinations would make it into a PG-13 environment. That said, the blood itself was never integral to the games. Having played the whole series, I'd be more inclined to say that the level of overall blood/gore is surprisingly low. Doom this is not.
DAMN
Well that's your choice, but the victims are still dispatched brutally and with lots of blood. You can play Metal Gear Solid or even GTA as stealthy as you can, but that doesn't change the fact that they're age restricted games for a reason.
Even if you manage to play the games in a 'PG rated fashion' (no such thing), the cut scenes alone are violent and generally depict many savage assassinations and instances of mass murder in a wholly 'R rated fashion'. So no matter how you play the games, the bloody aspects are always there.
To say it isn't Doom is obvious, but also a red herring. Not every 'M' rated game is equal, just like not every 'R' rated movie is equal, but that doesn't change the fact that they are indeed 'M' and 'R' rated movies.
You can try rationalize it away whatever way you want, but the truth is that Assassin's Creed are age restricted games, and if Ubisoft intend on honoring the games, as they repeatedly say they are, then the movie should follow suit.

I agree with the majority of what you are saying, and yes there is blood in the AC games, just not copious amounts of it.
Also, I wasn't intending the Doom comment to be distracting. Movies can get away with a lot more in a PG-13 setting than games can in a T setting. For a movie to be rated R just for the violence, there should be a certain level of graphic to the violence (although the MPAA is the least consistent organization I've ever seen so there's that).
My point there was that AC doesn't have the amount of blood across the board that a game like Doom would, and also the gore is way more a part of the game in Doom than AC. The AC movie can get away with stabbing plenty of people and showing blood on the blade, on the clothes, and on the ground and not sacrifice much if anything in my opinion.
DAMN
It's not just the blood, though that's a big part of it, but the intensity of the kills and the graphic nature of it, ie, stabbing a guy in the face with two wrist blades for one example. You've surely seen all the signature counter-attacks, they're brutal, they're savage, and they're a big part of the games. Assassin's Creed has that level of graphic violence in its bones, it's partly what elevated it above all the other games at the beginning and has continued to be an integral part of the series. The methodology of finishing off victims is almost as integral to AC as the "Finish Him" is to MK. What PG movie lately has gotten away with the sort of graphic violence that any Assassin's Creed game contains?

That's pretty standard stuff in the daily life of an assassin, especially in the Assassin's Creed games. Remember this movie has the same rating that the Prince of Persia movie had. How violent was that? What PG movie can match that sort of graphic violence above? The MPAA is inconsistent, yes, but not on violence like that. That's why the games are age restricted to the equivalent of an R rating, and that's why the movie should be in much the same place, content wise.

There is definitely an intensity that could garner the R rating (see The Matrix as an example), but there is nothing anywhere near as graphic as the gif you posted. Even the throat slashings in the games are just some blood, you don't see the throat open up and the spray is minimal. Most of what you see if just some blood form on the person.
Here's an example from Unity, which I found to be the bloodiest of the games.

Or this one from Syndicate:

Even the Jack the Ripper DLC doesn't come close to GoT gore levels.
DAMN
The Matrix wasn't rated R for intensity, it was mainly due to a few blood squibs here and there, a bit of mass murder and the fact that the ending song by Rage Against the Machine contained a lot of profanity that sent it over the edge. But like I said, it doesn't matter if a movie is rated R by a lot or a little, it's still an R rated movie.
Whether it's being stabbed in the face Crimson Peak style, or copping a sword to the belly Ironclad style, or taking a war hammer to the skull Braveheart style, or getting your throat cut GoT style, this is all violence that appears in all the games, hence, their age restriction. I take it since you didn't answer my question that this was your way of diverting my point.
I've already answered stuff like this more than I care to, though I admit that you have been much more reasonable about it than others, kudos. You can read this I wrote a couple of weeks age if you want, but I've nothing further to add really. It's all been said.

I do find it funny how people will defend the PG rating in any circumstance, but when an R rated version is finally announced, they cheer for joy. Take Max Payne for example, made into a PG movie, and I saw all the same arguments defending it that I'm seeing here, and what was the result? Another timid video game adaption that was too scared or too greedy to embrace its roots, and it suffered for it. If an R rated Max Payne movie was to be announced today, then people would be ecstatic, the same people who defended the PG tripe beforehand. People defended Wolverine and Deadpool being in PG movies too, yet when their much deserved R rated movies were announced, their fan bases went wild with exclamations of "finally!".

I can see that we will not see eye to eye on this and there is nothing wrong with that. Opinions are what they are, and won't always line up. However, I do have to tip my cap to you for keeping it as a DISCUSSION and never sinking to the usual personal insults that seem to pop up so often on these boards. Its been refreshing and I enjoyed the conversation. In the end, I hope this movie is good and does the game justice.
DAMN
Thanks, me too. 

We'll just have to wait and see. If the overall film is bad, the rating is the least of its problems...
shareThis also true if the film is great. In this case the rating will be unsignificant.
Nolan, I love you forever!share
Exactly!
share^^So much this. People put WAY too much stock into things that really won't change how good and substantive the film actually is.
Honestly, everything I've seen is exactly what I've been hoping for ever since I played the original game. As a fan, I feel no apprehension- only pure excitement. :D
It's irrelevant until we see the film.
shareBased off what I know about Assassin's Creed, I'm thinking it's bad. Kind of a Mortal Kombat (1995) situation.
What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.
The only thing you see in the games is a tiny ass bloodspurt you hardly can call that gory and R-rated material.
Pg13 is good
Why's everyone here acting as if they've already seen the movie?
One day in the year of the fox came a time remembered well...
