Playtest is brilliant
What kind of stuff does one have to go through to come up with a story like that, I'd love to play that game though

shareNo it isnt. It was incredibly boring and the ending was insufferably stupid and it all just fell flat
shareBoring as hell. It took ages for something interesting to happen and when it did it was predictable as f-ck. A real letdown and not worthy of being associated with Black Mirror, really more of a C-list horror movie.
"...but then I got hepatitis, because this pimp spat in my mouth."
I loved the slow, twisty build of the episode, and how it started small and then threw some insane things at us when we weren't expecting it. The ending was kind of obvious and choreographed, but it was still a very fun ride. Definitely my favorite so far, out of Nosedive, Playtest, and Shut Up & Dance.
shareIt kind of reminded me of "An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge." Only in the sense that everything happened in less than a second. And he came home at the end of his stream of conscienceness.
"The hideousness of that foot will haunt my dreams forever."share
Great reference!

I want to like this one, but there were too many loose threads. Having him die at the very start of the test left too many plot points unanswered, ultimately making the first portion pointless filler. Who cares about his money being taken or who that girl was? None of it matters by the end of the story. Otherwise, I thought it was a great execution of the mind going mad.

Liked it, but it took quite a bit from Total Recall.
shareEasily the weakest of the season. Literally nothing happened for the first thirty minutes then they go the predictable "he died!" route. An episode with nothing to say at all, no lasting questions for the viewer. A few good horror movie jump scares once it finally got going forty minutes in but otherwise trash.
shareHonestly, I thought it posed lots of questions related to the VR (Virtual Reality) phenomena and video games. People have been streaming horror games in VR with a heart rate monitor attached - the results are hilarious and a bit scary. How far will we go with VR now that it's on the market? Could we eventually simulate the physical sensations of touch and smell, like in this episode?
It was definitely the most predictable but it was one hell of a ride.
Those questions have been raised before this episode existed, so.... I wouldn't say that anything new was brought to the table in this kind of discussion...

Most broad science fiction ideas have been covered already, it depends more about the spin you put on it, and that in itself can bring up new ideas and discussions. Also the execution was done in such a way to make the viewer start to question the reality of the whole story and go a little mad themselves towards the end like the character.
I feel like even though it was a bit more predictable than I'm used to with Black Mirror it was still extremely interesting and well done.
I agree that the main guy is annoying-- though honestly, every American character on the show so far I have found annoying, but I have only seen the first 3 so far. I'm trying (unsuccessfully) to make them last but this is my favorite TV show and I'm not used to getting SO much at once.
Right, and I am saying a lot of stories have already done just that. A lot of stories that question reality present the ultimate question of what is and isn't real. And with their decision in ending it at the beginning of the experiment, not very original, I fail to see what new spin was added. I guess plot?
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the episode. It was actually the first one I watched of the show ever, and it is ultimately what sucked me into the series. I am just saying that I saw a lot of the twists coming because of so many previous stories covering this trope. It reminds me of the "he was crazy the entire time" twist. If anything, the episode has me asking more questions regarding the plot than questions regarding the philosophy or themes presented in its text.

I enjoyed "Playtest", not my favorite of the new season but i still thought it was good.
I wasn't blown away by the twist in this episode, however. It was predictable, mostly because this type of story, with the same twists, has been done before. It really reminded me of "Existenz" by David Cronenberg. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120907/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_12 . I mean it's almost the same story with the same twists:
A genius videogame developer makes this new game that is essentially an immersive virtual reality where it becomes increasingly difficult to know what's real and what's just the game. EXISTENZ, like the Black Mirror episode, features main characters believing they got out of the game, or that the game is over, only to realize that they are still in the game moments later. It happens over and over again, just like in the Black Mirror episode.
It was a good episode, just super predictable and not very original at all. Didn't say or really do anything new with this type of story. It did it very well, but everything that this episode did, many other tv shows and movies have done before.
Voted biggest @sshole and role model of the year.
