Nosedive

Seasons 1 and 2 were great. But season 3 episode 1 definitely did what it said it would. A total "Nosedive". You go from a show with interesting stories to some statement on ratings of people? Some of the other episodes had statements, but this is just shoving it down my throat. A nosedive is right. A show going from a 9/10 to a 7/10 fast.

reply

It wasn't just about ratings.

reply

Alright, it was about being normal and not caring about ratings in the end. But more than an hour!? That episode should've been 30 minutes. So many pointless events that could've been shortened or cut.

reply

It was about social climbing and the way our society is structured as regards social standing. An interesting subject which can warrant a lot. I found it very entertaining anyway.

At the start I wondered how it would last an hour without being boring, but it went off in a different direction.

reply

Some people just don't understand it. They think it is just en extension of social media but it is so much more. As you said, it is more about social standing and if you want to succeed in life, in work, you have to take part in the ratings game. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't sponsored by the government as a method of controlling the populace. Look at the airport scene, the security guard didn't have to use any force, in fact, he only to give her a temporary deduction in her rating for her to comply.

The episode is fantastic.

reply

Agree. The technology in this series is just the common thread. It's not what the stories are necessarily really about.

reply

Fully agreed that this episode could have been thirty minutes. It was a black-and-white concept with no gray areas, no sub-stories. A lot of repeated notions.

That said, I thought only Naomi made the best case (about 33:40 in) that it indeed was all for the ratings. This entire scene and its message was a point of relief for me, assuring that everyone is a fake.

I really didn't like that episode either. Gave it a 5/10.

It should have been 30 mins, but if it wasn't for this episode I would not have know there is a similar rating system in China. Crazyness ?

In fact, what China has cooked up could be much worse. The Government rates you, combining credit rating with your social compliance. I admire the genius of this, but am terrified of what it could become.

I worked in China for a few years, and I loved the place and loved the people, mostly the young ones though. Visit to the Forbidden City and you will immediately see that throughout Chinese history, the rulers have valued "harmony" over everything else. The internet once promised to be a tool for freedom of expression, but both the US and Chinese governments have poured enormous resources into internet control, and now it has become the opposite. The Chinese kids I used to know would joke about it. Controversial people like Ai Weiwei are "harmonized".

Wait, WHAT?! This is a real thing?

(I'm only going by how the episode portrays it, mind you.)

Congratulations on your backlash. Hope it brings you much joy.

reply

This isnt a backlash, it's my opinion on the single episode. I love the show, but I feel Nosedive was given way too much time. If it had been shorter with cut down details rather than a handul of events that dont matter pushing it past an hour, I may have been entertained. But their statement at the end that she doesn't care about ratings anymore was washed out by the fact that she still went to the wedding. If she had gone home it would have been a bit better in my opinion. Not a backlash, just an opinion.

reply

suggest you watch a show that is in level with your intelligence. where others like you will appreciate your opinion (and give you a high rating).

reply

I also thought she should have just gone home!

The very point of her determined to go to the party at all means she was succumbed to living for ratings.

They echoed the message that "it's all about ratings" SO MUCH. They didn't need so many full scenes to illustrate this message. A couple of scenes and a lot of background detail would have done it just fine.

It was brilliant! You're obviously a sub 3.. I'm so down voting you and you'll like NEVER recover ?

There were many stupid elements, but it's actually a parable about status in society, and a fairly disquieting one at that.

Many/most people do act very phony to be popular and accepted. There often *is* a social pecking order, and people contort themselves to fit within it.

Money, beauty, fame, etc. -- all compose the ranking of a person in this superficial view of society.

The introduction of social media in recent years just adds another layer to the status-seeking. We do often judge ourselves and others by the number of FB friends they have, the "quality" of those friends, etc.

While watching it, I thought about the rush I get when an attractive, intelligent, successful woman appears to enjoy my company. And how other women might evaluate me differently if associated with or recommended by that person.

And, of course, the mentally ill and the criminals are generally at the bottom of the pecking order. As in the show.

Except Community already did it better.

How so?

I liked it, because that could happen soon, and I hear here that it is already happening in China. That was a very good episode, better than the one with Waldo for example.
Sometimes some merchants organize some promotions only on facebook, so that people not having facebook account are already excluded, as if it was obligatory to have a facebook account.
