His accent?

What kind of accent does he have?
Never heard anyone speak like this before.
I found it incredibly annoying.
Am I the only one?

reply

It sounds Irish to me and it doesn't bother me. It's unusual (to my ears) but not annoying.

Mark Cousins's biography says he is from Ulster, Ireland. The family name Cousins is English and some of the Cousins emigrated to Ireland sometime after the conquest of Ireland by Cromwell in the 17th Century. That means that Mark Cousins is an Englishman and a protestant. One of the invaders of Ireland. Therefore, the sing song quality of his accent may be from years of begging the IRA to let him live.

Okay, that's in poor taste. The "Troubles" are over (we hope). Nevertheless, his accent is Ulster, Irish and may be affected by his English roots.

I find his accent quite annoying, but I also find that I cannot stop watching an episode of his film odyssey once I have started. Even as I cringe at nearly his every word, I am also compelled to watch and listen. I think I must give his documentary a 'Thumbs Up.'

You could pardon him being an egomaniac who has to narrate his own history if his ideas weren't annoying.

The Aussies form every sentence as if it's a question and I never found it annoying.

Sh-it's a secret!

His rhythm and inflection sounds exactly like David Feherty, the professional golfer, who was born in Northern Ireland.

At first , I actually thought it was Werner Herzog who was doing the narration. I did not find it annoying at all, just different.

You've done some bad things, sweetie.

I am not surprised that so many people have noticed this totally irritating component of an otherwise admirable and enjoyable piece of work. How can you get away from it? His utterly contrived, methodical inflection is excruciating to have to listen to and it's just incessant, there's no getting away from it. I just wished he'd shut up for 5 minutes. I don't like how other messages have remarked on the Irish aspect of his speech, as I am Irish and I don't speak like a soporific monk on LSD and also, Cousins is from Northern Ireland and the difference in accents of those from the North and those from the South is unmistakable. I have heard Cousins speak on stage before and in conducting interviews and Q&A's and he doesn't sound like he does on the recording for this program. He is putting this twang on, and I don't know what makes him think it's enticing as it is in fact, totally repelling. This is just the beginning of the problems of course, as Cousins is mind-numbingly pretentious!

I guess you are not the only one. But who cares about his accent. It was soothing to me but I don't even care about that. He created a very interesting documentary that will change the way I see film in a richer way. He exposed me to films I might have never come across. You honestly had a problem with it due to his accent?

reply

Not the accent. The upward lilting at the end of every single sentence. That's not an accent, it's an affectation, and for many of us, it is too distracting to enjoy the work.
