I didnt really understand the casting decision of Patsey. The actress that played her looked like a boy and she was cast to be the object of lust by her master. But, it just was not believable. The actress should have been much more attractive.
I know it might be hard to make a slave look "hot or attractive" but I'm sure they could have found an actress that would have made it more believable. No slave master is going to want to bang his ugly slaves.
OP, you are assuming that rape is only about attraction.
Rape is largely about power and control.
Besides, Patsy was forbidden. His lust/feelings for her would have been taboo and enticing.
Also, you make the mistake of believing that attraction is universal. Attraction is subjective. Nor is attraction purely physical. Any number of things can attract us to a person. If you think that only women that you feel are attractive are raped or abused then you should really take a look into rape statistics.
Lupita Nyong'o is a beautiful black woman and sorry not all slaves nor do all black women have curly afro hair, Lupita is an accurate representation of the other side of black women that society doesn't consider as beautiful. Lupita is gorgeous and you're ignorant.
And slave masters banged anything because they were predatorial creeps and just because they could. Also your level of attractiveness doesn't stop you from being raped
level of attractiveness doesn't stop you from being raped
Of course it does. If a man is going to rape someone he may as well choose someone good looking. Seems silly to pick someone ugly who would probably give it up willingly.

No *beep* dumb ass, rape has a lot to do with power and wanting to feel in control. They're sickos, they don't give a damn how beautiful you are, what color your skin is, or how long your hair is, he took advantage of her because of her work ethic and also because she was a sweet innocent teenager. I was molested as a child, 6 years old ... What grown man would find a 6 year old attractive or unattractive? No, he did it because he could, because I was vulnerable and because he felt in control. My little 4 year old cousin was raped and beaten but I'm sure it was only because she was beautiful or as beautiful as a 4 year old little girl can be in a grown man's eyes right? your level of attractiveness does not stop your from being sexually abused and you're ignorant to think other wise.
And besides, he was a slave owner for *beep* sake, rather the real Patsey looking like Lupita or not I'm sure her physical features didn't attract him at all since he was a *beep* racist. Slave Owners raped their slaves all the time, simply because they had the power and control too, and a weird fetish. It had Little to do with physical attraction.

First of all, what we consider attractive these days is completely different from what was considered attractive back in the 19th century---it's not even the same damn thing. So what if the actress wasn't attractive by whatever the hell your limited standards are--she did a pretty good job in a very difficult, demanding role. If you're seen pictures of actual people from the 19th century, virtually none of them looked like supermodels or anything like that. Plus, 12 YEARS A SLAVE wasn't a Hollywood film--it was an indie film---so the people they cast looked far closer to how actual slaves (and people in general) looked in the 19th century. People are so use to picture-perfect looking supermodel-like actors/actresses in Hollywood films, y'all can't deal with anyone who dosen't look like that. And a slave woman usually wound up abused or assaulted simply because she was looked upon as property--so it didn't matter what the hell she looked like. And if you think Lupita Nyongo, who is a stunningly beautiful woman, looked like a boy,you need to have your eyes re-checked again and again. Anyway, what a stupid post---you must be a silly teenager or something.
This is not correct. The standard for attractive was ALWAYS young, curvy and thin. This is because biologically this indicates healthy offpspring and we are hard-wired to find it attractive. Even in middle ages when being fat meant to symbolize wealth think ladies were considered more attractive, despite what some panting philosopher might tell you.
I think Patsey should have been played by a more attractive actress
That was never the point. She was not supposed to be an ethereal beauty. Patsey represents the fantasy to Epps. It's like an object, and the fact she's his slave makes it all the more exciting to him.
Side note: Lupita is a very attractive woman, but maybe you should look past other people's looks to see that the inside sometimes matters more than the outside?

All I'm saying is that it would have been more believable if the slave he picked out to bang was a Toni Braxton, Stacy Dash, Halle Berry, Rihanna, Cassie type. Even Nicki Minaj lol.. If he has an entire farm of slaves, and the most attractive female was Patsey....i mean it's just not that believable. It's not like the slaveowner was some gross dude. He was a handsome man that could find many more attractive women to sleep with than Patsey.
Plus, some slave owners had legit affairs with their slaves. And they were only having affairs with slaves they found attractive and wanted some form of relationship with.
It kind of reminds me of the scene in Schindler's list with Helen Hirsh and Amon Goeth. Amon Goeth, even though he despised Jews, still picked out the MOST SEXY ONE he could find to mess around with. Lupita, no no no...not in this film.
You made a post saying Whoopi Goldberg is beautiful. And you want to lecture me on my taste in women? I fairly certain you are blind. At least I can see.

I don't care about your personal taste in women. That's not the point. The point is that not only light skinned and curvy slaves were raped and it's silly for you to suggest that it wasn't "believable" for Lupita to play the part. What you're basically saying is that no man with other options would choose her. It's fine if YOU wouldn't but don't think that you speak for everyone. Besides, as others have told you, rape isn't necessarily about attraction.
