The little girl travelling alone

How many people do that? Just curious. If I had a kid I wouldn't

reply

It happens. There is usually a parent or guardian at the gate to pick them up after the plane lands.

They don't travel alone. They are considered to be in essentially "babysitter" care by the crew and pilots. I flew alone when I was 10, and my sister was 7. It's quite normal. Like I said, the entire crew, including the pilot and co-pilot (and navigator if there) are all responsible. The child does not "travel alone" but is under supervision given by parents.

It's more common than you might think. All quality airlines offer a U.M. service (Unaccompanied Minor) and the youngsters are not only taken good care of, in many cases they get the real VIP treatment. Check out the U.M. pages on some of the world's better airlines. Technically, a child traveling alone is considered an U.M. by most airlines up to the age of 14 but many airlines will still offer the service for a child traveling alone, up to the age of 16, if requested. The airline will require forms to be completed and copies of the passport/ID cards of the guardian meeting the child at the destination etc... all good common sense stuff. On long haul flights where more than one airline is involved, carriers will even pass the child on to the next airline, if they have code sharing agreements or are in an alliance together etc. Hope that helps!

Unaccompanied Minors are on the manifest during the crews briefing prior to boarding. A flight attendant is assigned to each one and pay extra attention to them from boarding until walking them off the plane and released only to the person (most likely a parent) whose name is on the manifest to meet them and only after verifying their identity. In extremely rare circumstances where the plane gets diverted the flight attendant takes the child with them to the layover hotel upon notification to both parties.

I was really hoping that she was the one texting him.

reply

LMAO ! That was funny.

reply

Well, when you realize it's not worth paying double air fares for a simple 'pick-up', I think you will. The child is completely safe.

A little girl flying alone? All by herself? Without a guitar playing French nun by her side? Totally unrealistic.

My daughter flew alone from Phoenix to New York by herself when she was 7. Just once did I have to do that.

reply

Yes, I flew from LA to Pittsburgh alone when I was 8 to visit my grandparents.

There were some kids flying from Chicago to Los Angeles next to me. They had brought porn stored on their electronics.

In this movie the girl seemed a bit neglected, until she was placed next to the drunk red-head.
