Never heard of this

until the golden globes told me it's the best movie of the year.

reply

It played at some film festivals and premiered on Netflix. Honestly it sounds like a mess based on the description and reviews online aren't even that great. Knowing the Golden Globes, it was probably given awards solely for political reasons.

When did I say I 'waited for awards to tell me what to watch'?

Remember the rule about assuming!

It is probably because you do not live in Woke World. The actress playing Emilia, Karla Sofía Gascón, is a transgender 'woman.'

reply

Jeez. You guys never hear of anything, let alone see anything. I bet you didn't even see it? Do you know of Audiard films? Mexican cartel male who loves women. Personally, it was my favorite movie. James Cameron says he saw it three times and it was his favorite.

reply

Wrong. I received a screener of this some time ago and did not bother to watch it.

reply

How can you not like it. Did you hate Dog Day Afternoon as well?

reply

I do not love Dog Day Afternoon because I am not a fan of Pacino. I know I am part of a tiny minority, but he comes across as hammy to me.

reply

Dog Day Afternoon is about a guy robbing a bank to pay for his male lover’s sex change operation. But you didn’t mention that.

Hammy came later. He was in the ‘70s. Godfather 1 and 2 and Dog Day Afternoon - great movies. Or maybe I should look them up on Them.us.

reply

I have seen DDA and many if not most of Al Pacino's films. No one save for me dictates what style of acting entertains me.

reply

So almighty one. Did you see Emilia Perez or not?

Wrong. I received a screener of this some time ago and did not bother to watch it.

No, I have not seen it in the past hour since I posted this. You even responded to it. ;D

reply

This is insane. What does “did not bother to watch it” mean. And you are now just saying that you just watched it after my post over an hour ago. It’s a two hour movie.

How did you ever get a screener.

reply

[deleted]

I do not want to be unpleasant. I know how you feel. I watch mostly International films and television and when I post a comment ... crickets. It is frustrating. I miss the IMDb boards where there was always someone with whom to discuss non-blockbuster movies.

Yes, I get screeners, and do not always care to watch them. This was one of those.

reply

I first heard about Emilia Perez during Cannes Film Festival where it received a 9 minute ovation. The director of this movie is French and has made the best movies - I don’t know if you have ever seen any. The Substance got a 13 minute applause. But, Anora won the Palme d’ Or. I hope you get to see all three of these because they are magnificent. Emilia Perez is my favorite of the three. It was James Cameron’s too - he saw it three times. I think perhaps Netflix might have a lot to do with bringing other films for us to see because just seeing this Marvel stuff is stunting the movie industry. Also, Neon and A24 - Films can rise again to being really great. And ironically this is a movie site - but you won’t ever hear about movies here.

Here is a review from Them Us, a popular LGBTQ site.

reply

Just what I was saying - this is a movie site that really isn’t. And you didn't bother to watch it either.

reply

There are so many movies released in a single year. It's arrogant to assume you have a monopoly on what people should and shouldn't watch.

reply

What was arrogant. Are you commenting on a comment I said to the guy who got the screener but didn't watch it. I have no idea what you are talking about. Apparently I hurt your feelings. See whatever you want to see. This is a great movie. Watch it or don't watch it. I saw it at a theater. I loved it.

reply

Not a guy. And if I watched every screener or link I receive, I would not have time for the entertainment I enjoy.

Paul is not wrong.

reply

You edited this post. ;D You added the last sentence to seem like you actually DID comprehend my earlier post. double ;D

reply

I don’t know what D is or Double D is except for a bra size. I honestly still don’t know if you saw the movie ever, even if it was in the last hour. I saw this movie and I liked it. There is nothing arrogant about that. I hope Paul sees it. I hope you see it at some point when you do have time and I hope you want to see it. I hope you and Paul see other movies. Movies that you want to see when you have time. I would love to know when does one say Crickets.

I was going to respond separately to your comment that you were not unpleasant at all. I do see international films and TV. Many. So I would imagine you have enjoyed Audiard’s films even his TV episodes with The Bureau. I also see that you wish IMDB boards were back. I have made a lot of replies on movie chat but very few original posts but one I did make years ago was how I wish IMDB was back and nobody ever responded to it. My point is usually that there are a lot of people who have opinions on movies they have not seen. And a majority of posts are just that. Also most posters are male on this site. So I apologize for thinking you were a guy. If this was IMDB, this discussion would never have taken place.

reply

Fair enough. That was a winkie smile - ;D The "double" meant two smiles.

"Crickets" mean silence, or in MC terms, no one responds.

"Tumbleweeds" is another analogy for no response. I have lived in France and will be returning.

On IMDb, even the Dance and Classical Music Boards had activity. Ici il n'y a rien.

Edit: That last sentence means 'there's nothing here' (like that). Most sites think I am a guy.

reply

I actually speak French. All because I saw a classic French movie a while back, and I have since seen almost all French movies. Emilia Perez has a French director but it is in Spanish and there’s music. You should give it a go. As you have noted, the LGBTQ community in US is not in favor of this movie and it looks like their opinions have swayed you from not seeing it. Although I think with you it’s the reverse - it’s that thing in this movie that is the reason you haven’t seen it. Maybe the LGBTQ community US is more aligned with Wicked - which as it turns out is an awful movie in my opinion. The LGBTQ community in France is behind Emilia Perez however. Very few people see movies in a theater. But there are a lot of good movies out there that people will miss because they are dismissed on this site. To be honest, you don’t come across as a person really being interested in film and probably think all these great movies are woke, which is the other reason for MC being annoying and one of main reasons we do not have IMDB now.

reply

So?

I don't know you from a hole in the ground, so I don't know if you know a little or a lot about contemporary arthouse cinema. But, either way, it would be a strange kind of award ceremony that only awarded films you personally had heard of, wouldn't it? They'd have to keep phoning you up. It'd get exhausting.

reply

What a remarkably stupid comment! Thanks for the laugh!

reply

Trust me, sunshine, you are not the arbiter of stupidity.
