As it turns out, that was true: at least two anonymous members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences apparently never saw Steve McQueen's eventual Best Picture winner, this despite placing the film atop their Oscar ballots.
But they said they voted for it anyway because, given the film's social relevance, they felt obligated to do so."
...because of its content and subject matter. That was confirmed by one anonymous voter in interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The woman said she didn't watch "12 Years a Slave" because she didn't want "more terrible stuff to keep in my head." Said the voter, who self-identified as a senior: "I have never liked movies that have severe violence."
So you have ever wondered if this really happens? You bet it does. Interesting to imagine all the implications here in past BP wins.
Not for Loki, I mean, but Hiddleston will have the small acclaimed independent niche market as his oyster. He's built for those roles. He was just nominated for a best actor Olivier award (The UK version of a Tony) for Coriolanus.
~~~ It just goes to show, we dont know *beep* about fungi.
The reason he didn't get an Oscar nomination, is probably because the stories in the MCU needs far more dept and more realistic dialogue. The reason why movies like The Wolf of Wall street, Dallas buyers club, The Dark Knight etc. gets nominated for non special effect related oscars, is because of an insane dept to the storyline, and because they stand out from the crowd, and because of believeable dialogue. Dont get me wrong, i enjoyed the film, and i like the MCU but the actors has very little to work with, and at times it just seems that they are coming up with a lot of bullsh#t as the story goes. But then again if they want oscars for more than special effects they need to pull their fingers out of their asses and give their stories far more dept, more realistic dialogue and focus more on storyline than special effects, if ever hoping on winning an oscar for Best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best motion picture, best achievement in directing, best writing etc.
Marvel are not interested in Oscars for Best Actor or Best Pictures. They are careful what actors they cast because they know a good actor sometimes can save a bad movie. But their movies can make an actor popular like it happened with Chris and Tom and if the actor is good enough he can star in Oscar-worthy pictures.
TWoWS and TDK were not the deepest films out there, you know? Sure they had WAY more underlying themes than T:TDW but don't overreact about their insane depth.
I agree, however, that if the movie as a whole is better put together, then the rewards for good performances are more likely to happen. A great performance of one actor can be overlooked if the whole movie is trash. Because then it's just a jewel in a mud and seems unfitting all-together.
