Why did this movie do so poorly in the US?

I know that auto racing films in the US have a mostly poor box office record but I'm wondering if the fact that Rush was Formula 1 made it even worse. F1 racing isn't really that popular in the US compared to other countries.

who cares really about two foreign race car drivers! I know I don't. Even though I know there story growing up in the 70s and watching lots of racing. I prefer a good world war story of brits and germans
