How on earth is this an 8+ movie on IMDB?

Wooden acting, weak dialogue, and a story that's more like a forced drama than anything else.

I would give it maybe a 7 and that too for the setting and the snazzy depiction of the era. Maybe a refreshing escape from the superhero crap we get these days. But that's as far as it goes.

Deservingly snubbed from the oscars.

My guess... A lot of people voted in the 7-9 range... Just a working theory tho

Yeah, real life, such a "forced drama"... What? I heavily disagree with the acting and dialogue too, don't know why you would think that. To me it sounds like you were going into a movie wanting to hate it, and accomplished your own little mission.

I thought it was excellent on many levels and was thoroughly entertained. I nearly gave it a 10 and only took one point off because Niki Lauda and James Hunt were actually friends (they even flatted together at one point) and Niki Lauda seemed to be portrayed as a bit of a shy recluse when in actual fact he is quite often in the media.

As for being snubbed, I can't see how American Hustle is so much better. Perhaps because the word "American" is in the name is what makes it so good. Each to their own I guess.

Remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future!

I've noticed some people just tune out when I tell them the movie involves auto racing.

Totally the opposite response from me. I'm not a fan of motor racing at all and pretty much got roped into seeing this, and yet it ended up being my favourite film of last year. After seeing it I went and looked back on the real rivalry and watched some footage. Daniel Bruhl's imitation of Lauda is uncanny. Even Niki Lauda himself expressed how surreal it was watching his performance. It was undeservedly snubbed from the Oscars, particularly from the Supporting Actor and the Sound Editing and Mixing categories. The sound was intense.

I gave it a 9. It was refreshing. I don't religiously follow F1 and I know Howard portrayed the relationship wrongly, but the cinematography was superb and the story was good. However, I do know what the naysayers mean. It felt wooden, however I think Howard was going for a docudrama feel. I get it, after Senna which was an F1 movie that was supposed to be a documentary actually playing up Senna like mad, because Senna's family contractually made sure the movie wouldn't portray any of them negatively, when Senna was actually an *beep* In this film, the guy that lives, actually admits serious character flaws in this movie. It was pretty brave.
