How on earth is this an 8+ movie on IMDB?

Wooden acting, weak dialogue, and a story that's more like a forced drama than anything else.

I would give it maybe a 7 and that too for the setting and the snazzy depiction of the era. Maybe a refreshing escape from the superhero crap we get these days. But that's as far as it goes.

Deservingly snubbed from the oscars.

Watch Senna instead, way better. :)

To OP.

What kind of a person sees the imdb as some infallible source of how a movie is graded? Have you ever taken a look of what kind of movies are in the top 20? A whole lot of them are only ranked that high because they've been propped up by hordes of kids and the worst kind of nerds.

Conversely a lot of fine movies don't even make the top 250.

If this bothers you I suggest you burn all your energy on movies far more overrated on the imdb, especially those that became huge blockbusters and pretty much dictated the direction Hollywood decided to take.

I'm totally uninterested in racing but this movie kept me watching all the way through. Towards the end I thought to myself this movie on a scale from 1 to 10 is a 6-7. It's not great but it's quite good.

Then something happened. The ending. I thought it was truly amazing, the airplane scene. That took it up to a 8. If I liked racing it would probably have been higher. I really liked the acting, tho I have to admit I had a hard time with the dialect and Lauda.

This is the same question to everybody as "how did American Hustle" deserve 10 Oscar nominations when it deserved ? of it, not including include best directors, best supporting actor, best actress and best film but hair and make up is more deserving

Simple to explain

Personally I would give the movie a 7 because it is really quite a good movie for a mainstream film. But my 10s are masterpieces, the best films of Kubrick, Lang, Tarkowskij, Leone, Hitchcock, Renoir, Fellini, Wenders, ... so I compare Rush to really good movies and there is still a difference. A lot of people nowadays don't know much about the top quality a film can get, so they easily give 8, 9, 10 to good mainstream products, because good mainstream is rare.
