Much more accurate than most films. I would even consider that scene to walk the line of ultra violence, which the movie is laden with. This scene was meant to be uncomfortable and touching at the same time, the movie does this often. A romantic song playing as the serial killer-killers saw peoples heads off and the entire Quacker story. Cheers.
I've witnessed a man put a shotgun under his chin and blow half his head off and still live. Had a buddy take one in the side of his head from a short distance. The bullet ricocheted off of his skull, traveled around and went out the other side. Never even penetrated his skull, concussion though. Met a guy at the VA had almost half his brain blown out, still alive. Of course, for some people getting killed would have been easier than living with what happened. But, yes, a gunshot doesn't always mean instant death. If you are worried about realism, you should wonder how people in movies can still walk after getting shot in the leg, or be able to do much with the arm that got winged. But, no matter what, you're really not going to find a lot of realism in movies. People love made up fake crap that could never really happen but makes for a good story, it's probably why the bible is so popular.
No, Billy had the flare gun next to Bonny's head right up to the end. If this movie was ruined so easily for you by that, you must be disappointed in a lot of things.
1. People's heads don't usually explode unless they're made of explosives--or in a horror movie, but you can blow half of your head off with a shotgun;
2. It is relatively difficult to make a car's gas tank explode;
3. Depending on the ammunition and gauge (and size of target), a shotgun blast can throw someone ten feet through the air, but not nearly as often as in the movies;
4. Ever heard of a pre-frontal lobotomy? The bullet hole looked relatively small, so if it were a .22, he certainly could have lived through it, not only long enough to ask for paw.
Gunshot head wounds are almost always fatal, but the survival rate is not as low as most people think it is (5%). It's not instant death either, especially if shot from the front, or behind. Bullets to the head are considered focal head trauma in that they usually only damage specific areas of the brain. Though the damage is usually severe and permanent, there is a higher possibility that they won't even render you unconscious and other parts continue functioning normally. Note however that being conscious doesn't necessarily mean you won't die soon after.
On the other hand, blunt force head trauma, like a blow to the head or the back of the neck is far more dangerous than movies led you to believe. Basically, if you hit someone in the head hard enough to knock him out, he's probably going to die shortly or else will be permanently disabled.
Also, there was a scene in the movie where Marty and Hans actually discussed how unrealistic it was that Billy thought shooting someone's head with a shotgun makes it explode.
yes, there is that. but when second time i watched it it went with the flow. you can see how writer worked on this in layers. realistic story from collin and satirical from rest of the psychopaths. overlapping constantly but so smoothly we sometimes get distracted like in this scene. but great movie overall. your discussion is also valid though.
