I really liked this movie until the ending. Nadine's apology to her brother was was too convenient, the text message from the mom rang false, and the movie ground to a halt when she went to see Erwin's movie. Worst of all was the last scene where she made all the new friends with Erwin. I really wanted this movie to continue to break typically Hollywood conventions like it was doing throughout the movie, but the ending was really drawn out and "made for TV movie" predictable.
Sigh....There was so much to like in this movie and it was headed toward becoming a classic, but that ending was a betrayal to all the awesomeness that came before it. I wonder if the director had a different ending in mind and was forced to change it?
They actually did do reshoots pretty last minute on this movie (like a couple of months ago) and I think it was to change the ending so that it was a happier ending. Maybe the original ending was a little more downbeat and audiences didn't like it?
Edit: Just checked my post when it happened; reshoots happened in June of this year
Or maybe they should skip your reply and not lower their IQ ?
This ending was rushed. It's kinda obvious that they ran out of time or ideas to wrap this up as neatly as they did, or that as usual, studio execs ruined a movie by imposing a happy ending, even tacked on.
It doesn't feel organic watching Nadine go from a pompous, cynical and self-absorved teenager in crisis to a smiling, humble and thoughtful one overnight.
Writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig obviously put a LOT of love building up Nadine's character from her very first years, her past and current struggles, the tension in her family relationships. It's only normal that those of us who are more discriminating viewers expect the same kind of attention and quality in the resolution phase.
That's not what we got.
So maybe instead of trying to tell everybody how wrong they are, you could sit down a few minutes, think about what I just wrote, watch the movie again and maybe you'll see the light. Or at the very least stop asking people to justify why they feel a particular way about a movie.

Wow. You got me there, pal.

It made perfect sense because of what her brother said and the talk she had with him.

That's exactly what we got. Nadine finally realized that she was being a selfish girl. Very selfish.

lol. Dude. You just did that to me right here.

It's a message board. That is what happens all the time and it's expected.
Glad I could help.
Yes. You helped in making me see that you aren't being too bright.
Will you actually quote the things I said and talk about them like I did with you if you reply?...I hope so.

Nadine's apology to her brother was was too convenient
Or it's something that she knew she had to do because she finally saw that she was being awful and felt bad about it.
the text message from the mom rang false
It showed that the mom did what she knew was the good thing to do. That it was the right thing to do because she knew if she yelled at her in the text, or demanded anything, that a fight would ensue. She knows that those have never been good for either of them...How do you not get that?
Worst of all was the last scene where she made all the new friends with Erwin.
WHAT???...She was standing away from the group until Erwin grabbed her and brought her to the group. She was being introduced to them by Erwin and being introduced made her happy because she's never been introduced to a group of people before. You don't think someone with pretty much no friends their whole life would be happy to make a new friend and be introduced to other people?...And just because she was talking to them and smiling, that does not mean she made new friends. It's just called be social. You do it to.

My issue is not with how the ending unfolded, as you describe above. My issue is that everything worked out to a happy, pat ending that you expect from a typically Hollywood or made for TV movie. Because this movie had a fresh voice and characters that seemed truer to life than in a typical movie, I expected the ending to follow suit, and not have a "typical" ending. And my god did watching Erwin's movie grind the film to an immediate halt and pull me out of the film. UG!

Here's the thing about that though. It wasn't rushed because you saw from the very beginning that Erwin had a crush on her. So it's not like he did those things at the end, introduced her to others, out-of-nowhere. It all seemed to flow together in a normal way. Nothing came out of left-field.

So we will need to agree to disagree. I don't think the ending worked with the rest of the movie, and you do. I'm not going to change your mind and you aren't going to change my mind. Think I'll go watch "The Last American Virgin" again, which is a fantastic example of a teen movie that didn't screw up the ending.

The ending didn't work with the rest of the movie?...Showing that she matured, became more accepting of people and what they do, and realized how much of a pain, how awful she was being?
How did it not work and what ending would you have preferred?

...or watch the final episode of Freaks & Geeks, arguably the most authentic of all high school television "dramadies"...it was said that many people could not watch the series because it brought back too many painful memories for them...
I though the ending was decent, but I respect your opinion. Although I will admit something we do have in common, we both enjoy " The Last American Virgin".
I agree with everything you said.. I don't get how someone else would think of it any differently. And I honestly cant think of any other possible ending that could be better than this one.

Thank you very much. What others are thinking is really mind-bottling...Blades of Glory quote.

And I gave reasons why I thought what I thought, actually explained why, but the people who didn't think that way just said they didn't and didn't give any reason as to why. Well when they tried to give reasoning for it, they only talk about how people were being and ignore how Nadine was for the past many years.

Thats what I noticed.. they didn't give much explanation to why they thought that and just makes me think they just want to dislike it because everyone else liked it and they just want to be different lol

Ya. I quote them and explain to them why they are thinking the wrong thing, but they don't quote my explanation most of the time. They usually just say I'm wrong or something like that.

It's a cliche because everything works out neat and tidy so audiences can go home happy and never really think of where the characters would actually end up if they were real. The mom has dependency issues, Nadine is extremely self absorbed and therefor she would likely fail at actually having a relationship with Erwin. Ect The whole ending was an easy cop out when they were doing so well of making relatable authentic characters. My two cents.

Everything made sense though. And Erwin didn't all of a sudden have a crush on her at the end. He did from the very beginning. So it didn't come out-of-nowhere.
The mom has dependency issues, Nadine is extremely self absorbed and therefor she would likely fail at actually having a relationship with Erwin.
The mom, in the end, realized what she should do because she knew starting an argument with Nadine would not help at all because it never has. And Nadine saw that, knew, that she had to change her attitude about everyone. About life. Sure. There'a chance that her relationship with Erwin would end and she would go back to her old ways, but people do change and this was showing that she possibly did. Plus, she was young. So she was still maturing and this might be the start of it.
Ect The whole ending was an easy cop out when they were doing so well of making relatable authentic characters. My two cents.
To me though the ending flowed well with the rest of the movie and it was good to see. In the end Nadine realized she was, well, a bítch, and started seeing the good in others and not think negatively about them and everything they do.
I loved the movie.

Thanks for putting into words my thoughts about the film. It was so original in tone and action, that the ending where everything was tied up with a bow was a betrayal of all that had come before.
I can't wait to read about the original ending before the re-shoots. My guess is that it is more complex and nuanced, without the "Hollywood" feel-good ending.
It makes me angry when a movie that starts out with so much promise and originality completely cops out with the ending.
I felt if it was going to be a true cliche, there would be a makeover scene where the guy she likes suddenly falls for her. I kind of was missing that.
Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.
I really enjoyed the movie and the ending as well. I thought it showed growth in the main character. The real cliche is peoples criticism of "a Hollywood ending". Hollywood didn't invent the happy ending. Fairytales have had them. They've been around forever. Did you people that are complaining about it actually think you wouldn't get a happy ending? Based on what? The trailers? The posters? You couldn't tell it was a "Hollywood" movie?? Were you hoping she'd get raped in the Mercury Marquis?!? Your view is really unfounded. Complaining about the ending leads me to believe that you are suffering from the same narcissistic sense of entitlement that the main character had. (Yes I know I need to watch my run on sentences.) If you want to see another really awesome movie that deals with some similar themes you should go see Christine. Rebecca Hall is amazing in it. And spoiler alert- it's not a Hollywood movie. If you want more variety in films then support independent film. Find an art house cinema. Stop complaining about Hollywood spending millions of dollars and hiring thousands of hard working people to try and show you a good time.
Just saw this today and really enjoyed it. I don't think the ending was terrible, it's not like anything magically changed for her. She just decided to accept her reality and have a better attitude towards life and what it had given her. Her dad was still dead, her only friend was still dating her brother so things would never be the same between them and she finally seemed to have accepted that the pretty boy who we pine after is usually not the best option for us realistically. She wasn't attracted to Erwin, like at all, yet she recognized that he was a nice guy who was actually interested in her so she gave him a chance. I liked the ending...nothing too happy or fake about it to me.
