Anyone find the ***Spoiler***ing the ***Spoiler*** walls plot a bit disappointing?

I enjoyed this film and found its more grounded approach quite refreshing.

However ***Spoilers ahead*** I found the Riddler's blowing the sea walls and flooding Gotham a bit of a disappointing cartoony end that the film could have done without. It was all a bit Dark Knight's stupid Joker ferries plot-ish for my taste.

Given what had come before, I think the film would have benefited from something less grandstandish. It was a bit of a juxtaposition against what we'd had up to that point - a bit too Tommy Lee Jones / Nolan in style - compared with the earlier realism...

reply

Because without the final plot, The Riddler is not that different from The Punisher.

You see The Riddler needs to be a bad guy, otherwise what was The Batman doing?

reply

That's the biggest problem of the movie, The Riddler is the true hero, Batman just an idiot immature kid.

reply

I think that is why the final plot seemed a bit unnatural, from being angry of the corrupted elites to plotting a mass shooting, that is a strange U turn of story.

reply

Because the producers realized Riddler was the true hero of the movie and they needed him to do something evil, which doesn't have any sense because the major aspirant his men were trying to kill wasn't involved in the corruption scheme. That plot shows how mediocre this movie really is, comparing it to the masterpiece of Nolan.

reply

I agree. It could have been a much better movie.

Then again, it wouldn't have been a Batman movie if they let that happen.

reply

That's the problem, Batman isn't really a hero, more like a light villain, and you have to be such a great filmmaker as Chris Nolan to paint him as a hero while making a good movie at the same time.

reply

Yes. Vengeance is an immature idiot kid. The final plot is what advances his character into a grown up batman. It completes his story ark.

reply

Yeah, I get your point that he needed something further than taking out Gotham's corrupt figures but it's the seawall plot itself I was really getting at.

It was a bit too grandiose in scale / blowing up the football stadium / freezing all of Gotham daft like what we've seen before. Sure we could still have had the gunmen looking to take out the mayor or whatever but the flooding the city aspect was just pure cartoon and not really in the style of what had come before.

reply

But we would then suspect the mayor is corrupted too, how can you prove she is not? The Joker has been targeting corrupted officials, wouldn't he welcome a clean leader?

Mass killing is just a lot more convenient. Also there is that subtle climate change & anti-gun theme.

To think of it, the movie is quite liberal, but not the too "in your face" kind.

reply

Except Catwoman's preach.

reply

Hmmm,

actually what you and the OP say makes 100% sense.

reply

I actually loved that twist, and the final fight scene with the riddler henchmen. Felt just like an old batman cartoon episode.

From a story aspect, something "big" was needed because it all leads to that scene of Batman leading his people out of the water by the light of the flare. Where he stops being this weirdo vigilante running around beating up other lowlifes for his own reasons, and becomes the protector of Gotham.

It had to be something that threatened all of Gotham. Coulda been flood, fire, explosives, gas... plague of rats?

From a director's POV, a flood is the one that produces the best visuals. (The movie already had a big 'fire' scene earlier.) You can't see gas, and after any explosions all the action is finished.

Water has associations with baptisms. Batman is re-born from angry vigilante acting out his personal demons, to a guardian angel taking care of his tribe. So there's symbolism at play here.

The visuals of this scene were amazing. The way this tiny knot of desparate people cling to this figure like an island of refuge, his cape trailing behind him almost like it's embracing them. One of the most powerful scenes in the movie.

So, yes I agree with you that the actual event was over-the-top, but as a necessary part of the story of redemption it was a great move.
