It really does though.
Honestly, I'd rather listen to country music.
sharewhile there s plenty of shit rap artists like "mumble rappers" many rappers are at least still innovative, clever and form complex rhymes, metaphors and similies double entendres etc.. It ranges massively from talented comedian rappers like Little Dicky to old school skill like Eminem.
Meanwhile country music is utterly dead.
its so utterly stale every single artist adopts the same "country twang" even when they arent from the south.
their lyrics are boring and recycled. there is nothing innovative at all. show me a song that doesnt sing about whiskey, tractors, jeans, church, pickup truck, tail gate, beer etc. They often arent even trying to rhyme anymore. its become truly lazy popified garbage
I miss 90s rap. Although I didn't love it, there was something to it. Nowadays, most rap involved autotune and also, like you said, mumble rappers.
shareThere's still a thriving underground of DJs and MCs creating sounds that fall more in line with what you may remember from the '90s, but now that rap is the de facto global pop music most of what you hear commercially will be the not-so-good stuff. It was the same with rock and pop in the past, where the most popular mainstream artists are seldom the ones making the best music.
Here are a few tracks to check out that you may or may not hate. They all have, in my opinion, at least, clever, intricate rhymes that need a few listens to fully grasp, and funky hard beats.

The last link should take you to 13:03 where the song starts. It's a modern semi-remake of a classic '90s hip hop jam.
of course mumble rap and lots is shit.
but lots of people underestimate the cleverness of some rap and highly advanced lyricism and effort they put in.
it appeals 10X more to me than country shit like
"Your precious heart is a precious heart" -Keith Urban.
""She's a real nice girl, pretty as a plate, the boys call her Katie when they ask her on a date." -Hayes Carill
"Driving through town, just my boy and me, With a happy meal in his booster seat. Knowing that he couldn't have the toy, Till his nuggets were gone. A green traffic light turned straight to red. I hit my brakes and mumbled under my breath. As fries went a flying and his orange drink covered his lap. Well, then my four year old said a four letter word
That started with "s, " and I was concerned So I said, "Son, now where did you learn to talk like " -Rodney Atkins
There are some dumb lines in all genres...
"She got a big booty so I call her Big Booty" -2 Chainz
"Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is" - Gang Starr
The second and 4th links weren't too bad. It had a beat and didn't rely on a repetitive chorus. If I was in a car and someone played those, I wouldn't go crazy. Here is the kind of rap I can tolerate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uN3n-NjLHc
shareAs a huge Lauryn Hill fan, I thoroughly disagree. I don't mind country - imo there's a lot of overlap between country and rap, in that a majority of the music is average, but there are standout songs that are amazing and terrible standouts too. But taste is subjective and you're entitled to yours.
shareI don't mind the odd rap song, but post-2000, the songs sound very much the same. There is a rap video director here in Canada who has been making videos since the 90s named Director X and he said that he noticed with rap now, all you need to do is rap one line and repeat it. He gave Drake's "Started From the Bottom" as an example.
shareThe hyper-commercialisation of all music across all genres has given us that repetitive nature, so I agree.
shareRap is wonderful. Especially when The Three Tenors sang it.
shareA wet fart sounds better than rap
shareElectronic thumping, some angry young ghetto fugitive with his pants around the bottom of his ass chanting about beating hos and capping cops, as he stalks back and forth on stage waving his arms in odd ape-like movements. Yeah, that's right up there with Beethoven, Duke Ellington, and the Beatles. Rap is crap.
Okay, so now you hate my guts. I guess I'll have to reconcile myself to the prospect of life without your approval. Rap is crap.
You can't see their pants down to their ass when you listen to the music though.
shareSpoken word to replace singing can be creative and create a nice song - occasionally. But how and why did it ever become the dominant genre? It's a clear sign of cultural decline.
Yeah, I could take it in limited quantities. But it's became a cheap replacement for real vocal talent.
I don't understand it's rise in popularity. It seemed to happen after autotune took over.
shareAutotune was invented in 1997. Rap was big before that. There was Beasty Boys and Salt n' Pepa in the 80's. That Tupac fool died in 1996. Though I think that he was probably overrated just because he died.
shareThey didn't really start using it until around 2010. Thanks T-Pain.
shareHmmm. Rap should have died out by 2010 anyway. I've always wondered why it seems to have such staying power. Perhaps Autotune is what's kept it alive.
Okay, I see what you're saying now:

Linkin Park did an excellent job with spoken word. Rappers don’t.
shareI'm a fan of Old Skool, but I find modern rap is not my cup of tea (I must be getting old).
shareThey both suck. Though country does have an occasional good song while rap has none.
shareAt least country music doesn't use samples.
shareSampling doesn’t bother me. It’s the rest of the “songs.”
Also, yeah country does use sampling.
