I don't mind diversity in entertainment, I am certainly not a racist, but when I saw that OUAT had cast a black Lancelot, I knew I probably wouldn't watch much longer. King Arthur's Court may have been a myth, but it is doubtful there were any blacks in England (or very few who would be knighted)around that period of history.Apparently this was the writer's first shot at a diversity blitz, including later over the top feminist and LGBT themes.
Very entertaining early on, then very disappointing.
I was irritated at how lazy these writers were on this show, throwing in all the usual legends and crap that everyone else had done to death on tv, including King Arthur! And they had so many fairy-tales to explore that they never truly covered! It was also a very cheap move to turn Storybrooke into a refuge for Disney characters. In fact, some of the characters were a slap in the face to the originals, to be fair. This is why you don't let anyone from ABC, let alone two overgrown teenage boys, write romance and fantasy tv shows; they'll always screw up after a while.
I thought that was really dumb, including Dr. Frankenstein. The entire genre he comes from doesn't fit the fairy-tale setting at all, and his "real-world" name was just as stupid: Dr. Whale.
They should have stuck to the Brothers Grimm/Hans Christian Anderson stories. They started throwing Disney and I think they even threw in a Pixar character. It became a mess.
I liked the show but hated that Frankenstein episode. Especially where it ends up being that Frankenstein instead of creating a monster tries to bring his brother back to life. It's as bad as in the movie freaking titled Mary Shelley's Frankenstein where they had that scene that was not from the book where Frankenstein instead of trying to create a bride for the monster ends up trying to bring his wife back to life. Then having the monster and Frankenstein fight over her while she just randomly walks into the fire in the room caused by them fighting.
I admit I wasn't keen on turning both Sir Lancelot and Merlen African American. Actually it bothered me that they had Merlin be all young instead of being an old man. They could not even bother to even get that right. But I quit watching around them cause I am a huge King Arthur fan and I hated that they had him wanting to kill the main characters of the show just because one of them had been cursed with an evil spell.
