Not quite as strong as the first two, but WAY better than Prometheus and Covenant

I have nothing against those who loved both Prometheus and Covenant, but I'm sorry. Those prequel movies weren't that good at all mostly due to the terrible writing which involved one-dimensional characters making stupid illogical decisions and are nothing more than victims for the Xenomorphs. Not to mention the philosophical themes, while interesting in general, weren't fleshed out enough.

This film goes for straight horror while having bits of action throughout which made it work in it's favor. Ok, it's not a perfect movie and it lacks the spark of Alien and Aliens, but it makes up for it with a story that has some logic, characters that are at least worth-investing, doesn't shy away from the gore and terror, and really good visual aesthetic that compliments the first Alien while having a good mixture of CGI and animatronics for the Xenomorphs. So, yeah, this was a breath of fresh air after the prequel movies.

I liked Prometheus but Covenant was just a weird redux of the first movie plus whatever ideas Scott had for the alleged prequel trilogy and then crammed into one movie.

Good for you. There were some things I liked about Prometheus like the visuals, the music score, and the overall good acting from everyone involved (Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Charlie Theron, and Michael Fassbender giving stellar performances). And yes it had certain good philosophical ideas that are interesting in concept, but considering the movie had deleted scenes that could've fleshed them out, that's what made it all the more terrible the more I thought about it.

Covenant, however, was even worse than Prometheus because it took a huge dump on those ideas and tries way too hard to be a redux. Not to mention the CGI on the Xenomorphs wasn't that particularly good. Plus the characters made even more illogical decisions in order to further the story along with the narrative choices (like David the android being responsible for the creation of the Xenomorphs and killing off the Engineers). It's no wonder that movie under-performed.

Good to hear 👍

Thanks. I know it's not fair that I didn't actually like Prometheus and Covenant as much as anyone else did, but when the same director of the original Alien wastes good ideas on bland dialogue and one-dimensional characters that make stupid illogical decisions, I consider that a turn off and that's coming from someone like me who actually thought Alien 3 was decent.

Promethus and Covenant were masterpieces compared to this hunk of shit
