Last episode (S04E07) was really an insult to Norwegians. First at all, we can cook! We don't make bad food that you get sick of. Second, we don't sound like that! We actually sound like real americans when we speak english! That guy didn't even say "Lutefisk" correctly himself and we have so much more than just fish! Yuck!
Anyone else that thought it was an insult? I got so annoyed with this episode so just wanted to share.
It's only an insult if you allow it to be, sweetheart... and this is coming from an actual Alabama resident... all the stereotypes they present in this show are, to me, absolutely hilarious & don't insult me in the least... I love Hart of Dixie!
~ the hardest thing in this world... is to live in it ~
I can sympathize, but this show loves its stereotypes. It is in fact true that every New Yorker loves Woody Allen films and bagels and only ever read the New York Times - in paper form.
I'm Australian, and the world has been doing horrible, insulting impersonations of us for decades. But it's TV, it's fiction. Don't take everything so personally! It said at the beginning before they even went there it had bad reviews. It was supposed to be bad because they wanted AB&George to have a first date to remember. Just take it as a bad chef, don't worry about it, just another person who can't cook, regardless of where they are 'from'.
I'm Russian. In TV shows and movies, Russians are always either portrayed as being really bad guys (like in crime shows such as NCIS or Law and Order, etc), mail order brides, or really beautiful yet slutty and stupid women. My family and I have a game. We'll turn on a crime scene investigating type of show, and, we're always like "Hey, I bet this episode will have a Russian criminal in it!" -- a lot of times, we're right. Not to mention, they make Russian women always appear trashy and stupid in so many instances in TV shows.
But, I don't really give a flying rat's behind about ANY of that. And neither should you.
If I got offended and made a butthurt IMDB topic every single time that my culture was made fun of or insulted in TV or movies, then, I'd literally have no life because that's all I'd be doing. And, quite frankly, I have better things to do than complain about cultural stereotyping to a bunch of nameless, faceless strangers on the internet. And so should you.
Yes, they made fun of Norwegians. So what? Is the universe going to explode into a million pieces because they made fun of Norwegians? It's called having a sense of humor. They tried to do it in a funny and carefree sort of way. This show is ALL about exaggeration. I live in Alabama, actually, and IF ANYTHING, this whole show is a lot more insulting to southern people and Alabamians in particular. They over exaggerate the south so much. I've lived in Alabama for 15 years and I've been all over the state, and, I seldom ever run into anyone remotely like some of the most exaggerated characters on the show.
But, it's all in good fun. You can choose to be offended by these sorts of things or you can just be like me and laugh things off because there's just not enough time in the day to waste being offended by everything in TV and movies.
I can relate to everything from that post. I'm form Poland, yet I have no problem with polish people always being stupid, poor or just bad in TV. I don't think every American would assume that we eat only pierogi and kiełbasa here in Poland. And I definitely don't get offended anytime TV is making us look like this. I think it all comes down to how the particular show/movie deals with this kind of topic. So I'd guess anybody who watched HoD would catch the spirit of this show and don't get serious with any of it. Also, if you count stereotype jokes in HoD, I'm sure that the biggest amount has been made about the Southern America itself (yes, their kitchen too). In some other show that may be insulting, depends on how it's written.
to the OP: I've read all of your posts and in my opinion you're getting way too defensive. I guess you just lack a sense of humor, contrary to HoD writers. They have been maintaining a healthy distance to life and every aspect of it. So maybe you could learn something from them...
I'm not saying you shouldn't love your culture or whatever, but being a patriot isn't about getting all prissy about your country.
No I did not think it was insulting! It was very funny. George and AB were trying to find somewhere that they did not have feelings, good or bad, from a previous relationship. The ONLY place they could find in fairly close proximity was a NORWEGIAN restaurant that already had TERRIBLE reviews. (A HINT that this is not going to turn out well!) They wanted this to be nice for them so bad they were willing to take the chance to make a memory for them!!! It turned out to be just what the reviews had suggested! What I saw was OVER EXAGGERATION! Or Hyperbole, which this show is famous for! (and what makes it FUNNY). The restaurant was over the top! In fact if you really think about it, I live in the south, and I have never even seen a Norwegian restaurant here! So, someone wanted to open a restaurant, they were bad cooks, and they thought they could speak with a Norwegian accent! The restaurant itself was hyperbolic! Everything from the get go told me this was not going to be good for George and AB! Nothing to be insulted about, but it does follow the hyperbole of the show. It was FUNNY! Now George and AB have a memory of their own to look back on, and LAUGH!
I saw where someone else spoke about stereotypes, and HoD is full of stereotypes! This show is one of the few shows that is just good, clean, and fun! I hate that they are canceling it! But really, where in this entire world do you see a whole town that works together like Bluebell? Is mortal enemies with another town? Everybody gets along, with a few funny "feuds" here and there to help the storyline? What town have you ever seen where they come together and do pageants, like Dash's plays? They ALL come together in times of need…. everything is perfect! NOWHERE but on a tv show you can watch to get away from the troubles of the world. Please don't be insulted, I honestly did not see it at all as making fun of Norwegians, but just what I stated previously. 😄
oh come on now really? I thought this had to be a fake post at first, but you're for real. It cracked me up to see this whole discussion unfold honestly. The Dutch are always displayed as stoners wearing clogs and going to the red light district... Just like every other country is displayed as a stereotype in almost every movie and tv series. It's not like we don't do it to the Americans as well... who hasn't seen the overweight, non-cultural, gun loving American on tv? I hope you don't believe ALL of them are like that in real life.
