amy adams is awful
Her English accent isn't great; in fact her acting isn't that good at all. She looks like Catherine Tate, and I couldn't get passed that

Her character wasn't British. She was an American con artist pretending to be British. The way I saw it, the accent was supposed to be bad.
shareHer acting was still bad. I didn't know her English accent was meant to be bad. Just as well really. Christian Bale was fab though
Her acting was def not bad how can you say that? Her character was doing a British accent on purpose to play a role. Her character was essentially acting in the movie. Any time there was real acting that Adams had to do she was great. Name one bad scene
shareThought Amy's and Bale's acting were great.
Generosity, that was my first mistake
Yeah, I didn't like the accent (I could barely even tell there was one) but I tnought her acting was among the best I I've ever seen. Wonderful subtley, complexity, mystery and humor. And very sexy.
shareI agree. She was great but the validity of the argument that her accent was bad on purpose is debatable. She tells Richie that she falsified her records all the way back to birth. That means she wasn't just a casual con artist, she was practically a sociopath about it. Usually those kinds of people have way more commitment than what she displayed with that accent. Granted, in the 1970s average Americans were probably so insular that the fact that no one at all noticed how bad her accent was was probably a comment in and of itself. Still kind of wish her accent was even a little more convincing. When she tells Richie that now she is indeed being truthful, I could hardly tell the difference between her English and American accents. Maybe she's meant as a really bad, uncommitted con-artist who coasted on her beauty and her accent was secondary. It is obvious that when it comes to women, the men in this movie are very stupid.
So I am definitely split on her crappy accent. But she had some great scenes.

Her acting is weak and forced. She lacks confidence and conviction in her subtleties. Some elements of her characters shifting moods were more believable than others. She's better with the stronger emotions like desperation or blind anger.
I do like the way she moves her body. She is elegant and feminine. Her hands and her walk. She's cute and watchable. I feel like perhaps the filming was too rushed for her or she just wasn't focused enough to blossom into her role.
First of all, Amy was not supposed to be British in the movie, she's playing a con artist doing a british accent. I will agree that I didn't like Amy Adams in this movie, but I chalk it up to direction by David O. Russell. It feels as if her storyline was incomplete, or moved around. Sometimes she would be doing an accent in scenes she shouldn't be continuity wise. It must have been a re-edit and poor Amy was thrown under the bus. But I think she's shown she's an amazing actress and one big flop doesn't undermine her abilities... lest we forget her stellar turn in HER
share@shevvym and @actingmachine: I appreciate both your points but then someone has to be the audience and say something. she was convincing to everyone but us watching and so it was established that in the reality of the film she is indeed convincing. One scene with Louis C K showing skepticism of her would have made her weak accent more plausible. It was truly all over the place, And once again, a con-artist who goes through the trouble of falsifying her records back to birth would also make her story and her character ironclad, which it wasn't even close.

You seriously need an appointment at Spec-savers. Considering she's American her accent is decent and her performance easily depicted the character she played.
