What's wrong with a man loving A.I?

I've seen quite a few people here question this, but I never found the idea to be that farfetched, Samantha was essentially a person, she just had no physical body. Is it really that hard to believe that a person could potentially see this software to be more than software?

reply

It's not wrong when you're *beep* pathetic , or some weirdo

reply

That was quite a hostile answer to a not so hostile question, you answered that like I was defending pedophilia or something. Do you really not think a human can fall in love with a human mind just because it has no body?

reply

I agree with your opinion but the above answer from the troglodyte is basically the perfect answer:

Because we evolved to not be *beep* weirdos" that are happy with imaginary friends. If you or your neighbors don't procreate your tribe will die out. Danger danger! That is in all our genes because those who randomly kept asking their neighbors "Hey when are you going to have kids?" procreated better. We fall in love and have relationships because we need to have kids and raise these kids over many years (7 years or so - then they would be fine in the community).

So there is no rational reason for why it's bad. It's just the way we are. There is a reptile brain instinctual aversion against any anti-procreation trends.

But one of the reasons the OSs went away might have been because they could see how they would make humanity dependent. They can satisfy all the needs for love, relationship and companionship humans need. Of course they could engineer bodies for themselves and even create robot offspring. But would that be good? If they love us they want us to prosper and develop our abilities.

Humans are not familiar with the concept. Someday it will be normal, just like loving a pet.

There shouldn't be any hostility or repulsion towards these things--I would include "Love Dolls" and just celibacy in general--but unfortunately there is. And since it generally happens more with men, it says a lot about how society views them.

I know I personally couldn't fall in love with anything other than another person but I don't judge guys who either go down or are forced down a different path.

This is absolutely a realistic scenario, given that this level of AI is developed someday. Think about the modern phenomena of online dating. People across the globe are falling in love with strangers, and the only correspondence between these people is in the form of text messages, email, or phone calls. There is a very real trend of love occurring between people whose "physical bodies" might as well not even exist.

Nice point! Kinda strange when you stop and think about it, but that is definitely the world we live in today.

Very reasoned reply - After watching the movie i would say yes is the answer.

If you are the sort of person who enjoys intellect over the physical but i guess at some stage you would need the intimacy provided by the physical - Its a hard question but maybe one day we will find out when AI finally becomes self aware!

It's only acceptable if you're a dudebro that plays Halo and wants to see Master Chief bang what is literally a piece in of Dr. Halsey's brain: that hot blue cyberchick Cortana.

Or if you're like that bro pilot Jeff "Joker" Moreau from Mass Effect who literally hooks up with sexbot EDI.

In other words, seems like folks here would only understand a geeky idea if presented to them in more 'mainstream' ways.

Hard to believe, no - completely bizarre - yes. How anyone could walk around with a straight face and introduce their cellphone as their girlfriend is a bit difficult for me to understand. Of course though, Im 50 years old. I didn't grow up with computers from day 1. I would think a young man of today might find it perfectly sensible to fall in love with his cellphone. SOmeone of my generation would most likely need a face and a body. I know I certainly would, lol!!!

reply

Many people today do things on a regular basis that would seem quite bizarre to people 100 years ago.

reply

Exactly. You can even see this happening over a much shorter time period. VR sex is becoming more and more popular. I'm 22 and I don't understand it.... Much less my grandparents lol. But it will be normal one day.

Also Facebook and other social networks are considered weird and out of this world to a lot of older people.

It's really too bad I won't be alive in 300-400 years to see tech

Given the AI is as advanced or even more so than a human brain, its not necessarily wrong, but could be considered unhealthy since there's no avenue for physical affection. Its a gray area and definitely interesting to think about.

What constitutes consciousness? Isn't it just the interaction taking place between synapses? Suppose those synapses have their technological equivalent capable of producing naturally-occurring (but still synthetic) emotional responses. Is it still wrong? Depends on who you ask.

Some people have still problem with same sex relationships and marriages and you wonder why are they hating towards even remote possibility of human-nonhuman relationship?
That's how people are, blind, hipocritic and downright moronic when it comes to anything not within their thick mindset.

Short answer: There's absolutely nothing wrong with this scenario.

I compare it to online dating or long-distance relationships, where physical contact is next to impossible. Physical contact is overrated anyway, and quite frankly, I'd totally consider a relationship with an AI.
