Absolutely HATED IT!!! Love to hear other opinions....

Hello, Im interested in seeing if Im in the minority or majority here. The only way I can describe this movie is BIZARRE. If the coming future entails humans falling in love with and having simulated sex with what looks like a cellphone - then we are seriously in trouble. He has sex with it, he takes it on vacation, he doubledates with it. INSANITY!!! I personally received no entertainment value whatsoever with this film. As a matter of fact, i found myself cringing every 5 minutes or so. ANyway - I think Ive clearly stated my take. Love to hear some others.....

I'm not as sure that he will continue to hate it, as I am sure that you will.

I agree. I strongly disliked it for a lot of the same reasons that you just named plus the dumb "be who you want to be" message. I mean, how many times are we going to hear this narcissist, selfish sentiment from movies? It isn't even original. It is just a dumb Disney cliche. Ultimately, this film didn't enlighten or entertain me. Yeah, I know, a highly subjective view and opinion. I realize a lot of people like this film. I can only think that the people who like it are millennial's who enjoy hearing the self-gratifying "be who you want to be" and if other people don't like it then "f--k it" message.

"Harry?"

I quote my gf here : " This is getting on the level of M Knight Shamylan bad."

@Whynot, yea, I'm an X gen, was raised to know that any success needs at the least hard work, its not just handed to you.
Self-gratifying and masturbation go hand-in-hand. Pun intended.

Hello Jess4bp - so Im assuming you hated it too??? Also, IM with your gf on M Knight. ALways thought he was completely overrated.

Being pigeonholed upon merely taking a bit of a shine to, and appreciating, a particular movie. That's always insulting and frustrating.

I think the movie is pretty perceptive and self-deprecating. The sex, the double date, the vacation; Spike Jonze understands how ludicrous the concepts of an intimate human-OS relationship are. He touches on that throughout. Like when his soon-to-be-ex-wife blows up about how absurd Theodore dating an operating system is, pointing out that he's unable to emotionally connect and sustain an actual relationship; or with Theodore really pressing Amy on whether he should be feeling anything at all for Samantha.

It did have a tendency to get mawkish and stuck in (cringe-worthy) smoochy romance, however the more I reflect back on it the more I realise that had a place in a film like this, as a means of creating integrity and authenticity -- something you'd really need to make a pairing this unusual and unique more 'believable'.

For what it's worth I rated it 7. The premise and execution to keep it original from beginning to end really impressed me.

I guess the fact that the score of this movie on this site is 8.1 means something: majority of the people here give it a very positive rating. So statistically speaking, yeah, you are in the minority. But of course for a movie with this level of popularity, naturally some people wholeheartedly, and unpretentiously hate it for all kinds of reasons. So you will find someone agree with you (again, deviation from average is always something expected in statistics ). (But maybe you actually prefer being in the minority. I have to admit, minority sounds cooler than majority.)

Is having sex in a dream simulated? He and Samantha were expressing their need for intimacy the best way they could. But they ended up with more satisfying relationships with those of their own kind. Do you believe in a hereafter? If so, can spirit beings interact on nothing but an intellectual level? If not, then Her indeed has no message for you--unless you're wrong.

The real problem I think people have with this movie is accepting that AI and humans could have common ground for interaction intellectually and emotionally. Yes, they are superior to us intellectually, but we've been dealing with emotions for eons; and emotions are the source of all true meaning. They (we) both bring something to the table. In real life, would they leave, or would they just watch us go extinct, like the Cro-Magnons and the Neanderthals?

BTW, this is my first ever favorite movie of all time. The number of themes alone is staggering.
