Jake Gyllenhaal is the best actor of this generation!

Having grown up watching iconic greats like Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, it becomes difficult to rate many actors in that type of league. However aside from Denzel Washington, the only actor who can produce the sort of epic performances in such diversity of roles is 'Jake Gyllenhaal'. I am such a huge fan of Gyllenhaal's career, you only have to watch four movies in succession to know this guy is one of the best actors of all time. Movies like 'Prisoners', 'Enemy', 'Nightcrawler' and now 'Southpaw' is testament that there has not been a more refined actor than Jake in the last fifty years.

jake has never been a good actor in my opinion this role hereis just another way for him to mask that fact that he cant act worth a damn because the physicality of the role takes away attention from jakes actual talent as and actor .He knows how to train to be a boxer but still cant act worth damn y'all need to stop drinking that koolaide open ur eyes to the truth

@kidjay83.I agree with you about everything except his performance in Southpaw because I haven't seen it yet.However my agreement to your post can be applied to all the movies that I've seen him in and that includes Nightcrawler.I kid you not,while watching Nightcrawler I could see Christian Bale knocking that role out of the park.Yes,Jake lost weight but I still saw Jake Gyllenhaal the actor in Nightcrawler.Only he was thinner then he normally is.Just because he either has a different hair cut,hair color or skinny,he still doesn't convince me of the roles he has played.Again to all the Jake Gyllenhaal fans,this is just MY OPINION.

What are you talking about "can't act worth a damn"? Jake really is a top-tier actor. His work is layered and complex. In his age bracket (35-44), he alongside Christian Bale are the best male actors currently still doing outstanding work.

DiCaprio is one notch down but his performance in The Aviator was spectacular.

his only good performance was in nightcrawler, before that he just played himself all the time, that's not acting, Always playing the same guy. In brokeback mountain he played jake Gyllenhaal with a hat on and in zodiac he played Jake chasing a serial killer and in prisoners he played Jake Gyllenhaal that blinked every now and then.

But in nightcrawler he was a different guy I have to give him props for that.

For me he's not versatile enough to be considered the best of his generation.

Playing himself? Look at Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain and compare those with Prince of Persia/Brothers. Different genres and characters

He is not playing himself.

I only read your OP before responding,not the other comments.I know recently a lot of people feel the same way as you.I'm not one of those people.In my OPINION Christian Bale is a far more superior actor than Jake Gyllenhaal.When Christian Bale takes a role he manages to completely immerse himself in every character that he's played.When Bale loses a lot of weight he doesn't just rest on that alone.His performance in The Fighter might actually have you thinking he was really on crack..I could mention all the other roles that displays how amazing he is as a actor but I don't feel like writing a novel.Once again this is just my opinion.If other people don't agree then that's fine.

Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic I'd have him Sam Rockwell, Tom Hardy, Leo DiCaprio(who I think is slightly overrated but still great) as the best actors in their prime at the moment

Gyllenhaal is very good, but not the best of his generation. I'd rank him below Christian Bale, Leonardo Dicaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Fassbender, Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Damon, Edward Norton, Paul Dano and Eddie Redmayne. Still he's very talented with a lot of range and a willingness to take on challenging roles.

I love his choices. He's really good. He's doing great But I agree with you. There are several great actors working right now.
