Never mind a second viewing, I could barely get through a first viewing
I nearly fell asleep...

I totally agree. I just finished this and its a huge disappointment. It's Anderson's worst film by far.
shareThat's what I thought when I saw it the first time, but now, after watching three more times; it's probably my favorite PTA movie.
shareExactly!! Its made for repeat viewing... 10 years from now, destined for Cult Status
shareTotally agree. I fell asleep first time (was tired and laying down) admittedly, but immediately re-watched the beginning (and dozed off parts) to see what I was missing and it came together for me. Then watched it 2 more times and now it's my favorite PTA film overtaking Magnolia. I re-watched Magnolia this weekend to confirm and I do like IV better. I watched PDL last night having never seen it and wasn't even close to the others.
I can see why many do not like this movie though. It's not for casual viewers and as I've said in other posts, if you aren't aware of things like mind control/cults or have an interest in them, you won't get anything from it. It's not exactly an entertaining movie, but there is a lot of good subtle humor and cool characters. Acting and cinemetography is great across the board. But I like movies that are puzzles like this and Kubrick movies that require multiple viewings. Pynchon/PTA are cluing us in on some things I think.
Yeah, it had that "what the *beep* am I watching" vibe after a while, but there is a point when it all clicked and the ball started rolling along. All in all, not bad. A rather enjoyable flick.
shareI'm on therapy after this. 150' of dreadfully vapid pseudo-arthouse. PTA really screwed up this time.
Beyond boring.
I'm half way through my 4th or 5th attempt at watching this right now. I had to come here to see what the deal is, cause I still didn't have the most basic idea of wtf was going on. I'm glad to see I'm not crazy, and it really is a poorly made, meandering mess of a film.
shareI gave it a second chance but other than a couple of laughs it really has no redeeming qualities. It's not offensively bad like some movies, it's just dull, dull, dull.
shareI did fall asleep after about an hour, then when I was fully awake, I watched it fully from the beginning. One viewing will be enough for me. Interesting performances, beautiful direction, but a story that left me cold. 6/10 stars.
shareYes, it's too long. It would be much better if it were condensed.
