The girl team is suuuper psyched with lots of super giiiirl poweh! and they're bringing Christina Hodson, that made that suuper suuccessful movie Birds of Prey, which made a suuuper box office!! You'll have suuuper indepeeendent females and suuuper girl power in the suuuper reboot!!!
i can think of 5 interesting and tough female characters throughout the 5 films off the top of my head. i can't even think of that many male characters that i liked in the films.
There was one with Geena Davis.
The only bit I remember is a massive explosion that garnered more critical acclaim than the big boom in T2 when they blew that building up!
The main problem is the moment you go cheap, you must get rid of most of visual candy, which means you definitely need good stories and characters... and woke movies are known for lacking those, which leads to even less box office, and then even less budget, rinse and repeat.
That probably would lead to movie industry being heavily subsidized so they can survive... which usually leads to a (even bigger) drop in quality. It's a feedback death spiral, and I think right now we could be watching the beginning of it. Time will tell.
Seems a bit far fetched in order to throw some shade on wokeness in media. Let me remind you that being woke isn't a bad thing; coloreds and chicks have been kept down too much, historically. Give them some time to be equally appreciated. It just takes a while of excessive positive discrimination. But on the subject at hand: the pandemic is killing cinemagoing so that's what's up. Can't imagine people wanting to go back to breathing another guy's cough in a an unlit cave. Besides,.we have 85" TVs now so where's the rush?

I disagree.
Chick weren't kept down historically. They were fulfilling a different role. That role had both disadvantages and advantages in comparison with men. Feminism usually focus in the disadvantages, skipping (conveniently) the advantages.
Colored people weren't kept down historically neither. Of course, they had much lower chances in white societies. But nobody prevented colored societies and countries from thriving but themselves. It seems that white societies had the mandatory responsibility to provide quality shelter and jobs for colored people, and if they don't, they're "keeping them down", and I call that bullshit. We have gone from "whites must rule over other races" to "whites must provide for other races", which are both just different shades of the same mindset.

Whites must provide for other races is correct. Because whites currently are the strongest, and strong needs to take care of weak. Or else it will be swiped away the moment it's not the strongest anymore. And need I remind you that the Asian is on the rise? The only way to survive is to equalize all.

This position is actually very close to white supremacism. And I mean the REAL historical one, which could be summed up in "whites are the strongest, and strong are called to rule over the weak"

Keira Knightley was a good supporting character, she's a much better actress than the average top-model going actress, but I don't see her taking the lead role. The shoes of Depp are too big for that.
I mean in terms of if they're purposely looking for a female lead, she would be best because she's already part of the story and it wouldn't be too obvious that they set out to find a female lead.
Well, I guess they want Margot Robbie to play some kind of "Harley Quinn Pirate", even if she wasn't in the story until now. And to be honest, it's not a bad idea, she could have had a very funny chemistry with Depp.
But Margot Robbie alone... that's not enough. It worked very well in Suicide Squad because she was the classic secondary character that steals the show. As a female lead in the (politically charged) Birds of Prey?? Not so much. And this seems like it's gonna be Birds of Prey of the Caribbean.
