Produced by Eli Roth will lose any credibility in the genre if he does not take more creative control over editing and pacing. This movie, potentially could have been awesome. Dark, moody and scary. But, and its a big BUT, this movie lacked all of the above. Some nice creature effects but aside from that, a little to over the shop. B for effort though.

shareIt's interesting that you should post this. Because I was thinking about the same thing. The 'brand' Eli Roth is already marketed as if he is the John Carpenter or Wes Craven of this era. Now don't get me wrong, I love his movies (the ones he writes/directs), but I think it's too soon to advertise him like that.
So I absolutely agree! He should be more careful not to extuinguish before his flame of fame is at its absolute peak.

Wes Craven is highly inconsistent like many horror maestros (except probably Argento and Carpenter) but he is light years and galaxies ahead of Roth.
Roth is a passionate enough Grindhouse fan but he seems clueless about horror. Craven atleast got that horror means ultimately scaring us not buckets of blood. You can add buckets of blood to scare. But you cannot base the whole scare factor around the gore gags. He seems to think grossing us out = disturbing us, not that he is good at that. Cabin Fever was okay. Hostel pulled it's punches when it should have gone full throttle. Hostel II was an improvement though not much.
To date, the best thing Roth has done is that Thanksgiving trailer. He should turn that into a feature film instead of making unnecessary tributes like The Green Inferno.
Apart from Thanksgiving, Roth is so far striking out with alarming consistency but I sort of hope, he gets that one movie which blows me away.
If anything, this film was too good to have Eli Roth's name attached to it.

DAMN
"clown" is better than 90% of big budget Hollywood "horror" films. Horror films & action films are harder to make than other genres in my opinion because of the cliches & this film has some but is creative & unique in a lot of ways. Not great but pretty good which is better than most.
shareId rather have a clean conjuring and Insidious rather than exploitation any *beep* day. This is not horror just plain gore. This clown wont give me nightmares, 100 tears did and is a much more inconsistent script, IT did even when is not a great movie (mini tv series) but the dialogues of the clown the whole way he moves and acts and snaps, leagues far away from the comfort zone of a cliché movie disguised as original.
