The Women's Bookstore Sketches...

Ok so my girlfriend and I are in disagreement over the book store sketches. She says that Fred Armisan's character is supposed to be a man with long hippie hair. I believe that Fred Armisan is a woman and that he is in drag in those sketches. Whats the word guys? Fred Armisan's character in the women's bookstore sketches, man or woman?

reply

Candace clearly does not like defining people by their gender roles, but she is a woman.

The character is 100% woman. The actor is a man, which may have led to this confusion.

Um, he's supposed to be a tranny in those sketches. So he identifies as a woman but he was born as a man.

reply

Um, the character gave birth to a (now grown) child. Again, many seem to be confused because the actor is a man but it couldn't be more clear Candace is 100% woman.

reply

He's definitely supposed to be a woman. A lesbian.

It is deliberately left to be ambiguous. I think of him more as a man who self-identifies as a woman, but the show does not make this absolutely clear. These sketches are not my favorite on Portlandia (we get the joke already and it wasn't that funny to begin with!) but I find it overall worth putting up with because when the show is funny it makes me laugh out loud.
