The Women's Bookstore Sketches...

Ok so my girlfriend and I are in disagreement over the book store sketches. She says that Fred Armisan's character is supposed to be a man with long hippie hair. I believe that Fred Armisan is a woman and that he is in drag in those sketches. Whats the word guys? Fred Armisan's character in the women's bookstore sketches, man or woman?

I'm torn; either the character is "actually" a woman, or the character was born a man but self-identifies as a woman. There are probably more options.

I always thought it was supposed to be a woman, but there was an episode where I think her/his son was there and the conversation was about how the son (despite it being painfully clear that he's a man) wasn't brought up to be any specific gender, and he says "well I'm a man" and then she/he says "that can be changed" or something to that effect. That lead me to believe it could be that Candace (aka. Candy) could've been born male but now identifies as a woman, or maybe she's trans, or maybe it's just like the Nina character and he's supposed to be playing a woman.

Interesting question! I always thought Armisen’s character in that sketch is actually a man, but identifies more as a woman (not to mention – having a man play that role adds to the humor and irony). Of course, I could be wrong about that.

reply

Hmmmm thanks for the responses guys. It looks like there is no cut and dry answer here. More votes would be awesome though!

reply

No, it's pretty cut and dry. Fred's character is a biological (but very ugly) woman. She gave birth to Bobby Moynahan's character remember? Couldn't do that if you are transgendered. Not yet anyway.

I think he's definitely supposed to be a woman in those sketches. I mean it seems pretty obvious just by the way he is acting and talking. But, I think what's throwing her off is that they're supposed to be lesbians. I wasn't sure at first, but then when they showed that episode with Heather Graham, it pretty much affirmed it.

reply

I thought he was a guy. I thought it was supposed to be ironic. They seem to do that a lot on the show.

reply

Fred's character is a woman. I saw on a website recently that had mentioned several of the characters that Fred and Carrie play. The book store women are named Toni (Carrie) and Candace (Fred)

In those particular sketches, I don't think it matters at all.
I can't imagine why it would, really.

reply

I thought he was playing a woman. Those are my favorite sketches.

but how do you print it?

-Oh its capu-chuchu-chuchu tea. It helps clear out my tear ducts and keeps my skin nice and dry. It tastes like soot and hot water.

-I'm hooked.

It doesn't matter at all in terms of the show, or comedy; just something my girlfriend and I have a different opinion on and was wondering what other's though.

reply

Definitely, he is playing a woman.

During one of those sketches, I thought they zoomed in a flier in the store that said TRANS in big letters and given the nature of the store, I though Fred Armisen's character was a man playing a man who identifies as a woman, i.e. transexual.

As someone who lives in Portland, I can just say that gender ambiguity is somewhat par for the course here. I think the point of the character is for people to experience the question of "Is this a hippie guy with long hair?" "Is this someone who is transitioning?" or "Is this just a really unattractive woman?"

reply

@niobecat this is definitely the best answer yet

reply

Yeah that's exactly what I thought watching those sketches... I've never been to Portland but if this show's anything to go by its a dead ringer for the part of Auckland I grew up in (Grey Lynn), and I learnt at quite a young age not to bother trying to work everybody out. Some people are quite comfortable defying categorisation, particularly when it comes to gender.
