There is a case to be made about the consistent portrayal of mixed race relationships in adverts. We see it a lot in the UK. However, I suspect that your objection is more to do with your bigotry. Using phrases like 'the good old days' gives you away. When were the good old days? The 1950s even further back?

There was a little more to it than just a mixed race couple though. The writers did weirdly use the race situation as a platform to shoehorn progressive talking points. I saw no issue with the interracial relationship and, being a conservative, I was happy at the family-oriented efforts of Rusty and Barbara to save their marriage for the sake of the family.
I did find it annoying when Barbara suddenly suggested their biracial son would be accused of the murder because “You’re forgetting he is black.” This came out of nowhere considering the police and prosecutors were focusing all resources and attention on Rusty, a white man who came with the purported white societal privilege and actually had power connections as a former prosecutor. There was absolutely no reason in what we had seen on screen for the writers to squeeze this line into the show (other than, it seemed, establishing their progressive bona fides).
So far however, it turned out to be a throw away line. I also came to think maybe it was meant to show Barbara having a prejudiced and knee jerk reaction about law enforcement to make her husband feel guilty about embroiling the boy in the chaos. I have doubts that it will play out in the way I am charitably interpreting it though. We’ll see
Yeah, it sounds like one of those eye roll inducing mandatory racial gripe lines by the writers. Ruth herself is only half black, and pretty light looking. Dilute that further to a kid she has with Gyllenhaal, and they might not even show. How dark is the kid they cast as their son?
The actor, Kingston Southwick, looks like the all-American 16 year old. His mom is Persian and his dad is a blond haired, blue eyed Californian. So, the character he plays does not look biracial in terms of African descent. In essence there would be ZERO reason for “bogeyman” police detectives to racially profile him as a black man
