I've had it with 'What were you expecting?'

I thought the "what were you expecting" argument was dead and buried, but apparently some people still think it's a valid logical figure. What was I expecting? For 15 bucks, quite a bit more than an overstretched Saturday Night Live sketch crammed with self-referencing unemployed 80s stars. For a budget of 90 million dollars, some cinematography would be in order. This movie is made amateurishly, like they are on a budget. If you think that's a "tribute" to the 80s, then you haven't seen any 80s movies lately. They were good products, well shot, well edited, characters didn't just pop out of nowhere for plot convenience.

An action movie is not good just because it has action in it. Audiences are quite aware of that. Case in point, how does a Steven Seagal movie fare against a Jason Bourne one at the box office? People may be stupid but they realise when they are treated with respect and when they are contemptuosly patted on the head. That's why this piece of garbage flopped and that's why further instalments will keep flopping.

You do understand what The Expendables series is going for right? These are some of the biggest names in Hollywood all in 1 place. Action stars that have dominated the screen for decades and their all together on the same screen? Yeah, what did you expect? This is a fun movie packed with over the top action by over the top guys. If you want to watch The Bourne Identity then watch it, want to watch Terminator? Get to it.. Rambo? Nice, I'll send you a buy link. But this is The Expendables and that high budget mainly goes towards these big names that make the movie so great.

And are you really complaining that you got to see Chuck Norris pop in and have a joke about his popular internet presence? If anything that showed that even though their older these guys actually have a nice sense of humor and can still entertain the kids.

I agree man, not sure how this got a 6.8 rating. I don't trust that rating. This movie is BORING.

How can a movie with gunfights, explosions and one liners be boring? If you don't like action flicks, then don't watch them. Plain and simple. Go back to comedies.

reply

Well what were you expecting? The movie never tries to be more than what it is, which is a immensely brain damaged and fun action movie that gathers most of the biggest action stars of the 80's and early 90's into one place.

flopped? What are you talking about? For a 90 mill budget they pulled in well over 300 million, it was in the top 25 grossing films of the year...

I actually agree and I have always been for the idea of this movie. I get it and what they were going for and I've always been a fan of most of these actors but this was a legitimately bad movie in just so many ways.

If anything, fans should be outraged with such misuse of the available assets. You've got some of the most charismatic badasses to ever grace the gore-y screen all together and you produce this? Even the action was pretty crap by all standards but that dialogue...no words.

They desperately need a good writer/director combo for the next one, and one who won't be afraid to dish out directions.
