Old white male bashing exploding in the female director's face (a bit)...

Just an observation...:

All these drooling, white "dirty old men" producers and TV shareholders staring at Sue, Dennis Quaid as totally over-the-top producer/mogul "Harvey" (how subtle: HARVEY, get it, get it?!) - OK, point made.

But.. did you get all the obvious references to (at least) two famous directors?

1) Stanley Kubrick:

*THE SHINING: long corridors, the studio carpeting pattern, the white/red studio bathroom straight out of the Overlook Hotel's Gold Ballroom (I honestly expected caretaker Grady to appear in white tie and tails!); blood fountains at the end splashing at the camera lens/screen

*2001 - A SPACE ODYSSEY: The "Zarathustra" Opening Music at the New Year's Eve show; and remember the final scene in 2001 in that 18th century room with the astronaut's older, dying self lying in bed and the younger version looking at him, waiting to be reborn as the Star Child?

2) Alfred Hitchcock:

*The director uses Bernard Herrmann's masterful music from VERTIGO, a tragic film about a woman slowly morphing into another, "more beautiful" one.

Well... two (old, white) directors who weren't exactly known as being friendly to their actors, especially women. Egomaniacs who probably wouldn't last a single shooting day in today's Hollywood - BUT their cinematic legacy is obviously so lasting and great that Fargeat almost drenches her movie in it, bowing to the misogynistic, white, old masters.

Quite ironic, isn't it? As I said, just an observation... :-)

I don't think she'd ever get the irony of it.

There's a reason why female directors were mostly kept away from making films in the past. Their movies don't have any personality or style of their own, they're just following a template of things they've seen and are replicating it, poorly.

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel about women.

Interesting observations.

I thought the studio did remind me quite a bit of the Overlook. But I didn't think of it beyond that, apart from wondering if it was homage.

As far as I know neither director was known for being a "letch", so despite their perfectionism at the cost of the cast, I don't think they deserve to be targeted.
