Just watched: it’s too sprawling. Could’ve been far better

I think the movie has much to offer. The scenery and costumes are gorgeous. I think Costner is awesome in this movie. He talks just like John Dutton, and he makes a great cowboy. I also like the performances by Luke Wilson, Sam Worthington, Danny Huston, and others

The movie’s primary problem is that the story is too sprawling. As I said, a lot of the individual characters (Costner, Wilson, Worthington, and Huston) are interesting, and there are numerous plots that would be interesting on their own: there’s Costner and Marigold, the Santa Fe Trail, the Union Soldiers etc .

However, there are simply too many plots going on at the same time. Instead of diving into those plots and characters, the movie jumps from one plot to another nonstop. When you want to see more of Costner, for example, you end up sitting through one of the other plots for a long time. And since the movie is designed for 4 parts, the movie doesn’t wrap up each story, nor does the movie explain how all of the characters and plots relate to each other. At the end, I had to wonder about the point of it all. I felt as if I had just watched an assortment of random and fragmented stories

It also dwells on all the scenes movies usually cut around. You don't need to see the graves being dug, just show the cross being shoved in the ground. It's filled with bloat like this. Every minutiae of detail is focused on. I get that's the point but I don't know it serves the story any.

Thanks for your description. It sounds like something I might like but I think I'll wait until at least the second part is out or maybe even until all of it is out. I don't like unfinished storylines.
