Steven Spielberg tells Tom Cruise 'you saved Hollywood's ass' & Top Gun:Maverick 'saved the entire theatrical industry'

I don't see how.
It's not like Maverick re-primed the pump at the theaters. Other than Maverick's $1.5B, how is the rest of the industry doing?
Spielberg is right, and Spielberg could help save Hollywood too if he went back to making movies like he did in the 80s.
shareSo did Avatar 2.
shareGODZILLA VS KONG got there first. However, Tom Cruise made a genuinely good movie.
shareI thought it was that Spider-man movie from last year that first brought people back to the cinemas after Covid.
shareIt was certainly a relief from the usual superhero dreck and independent films about misfit teenagers.
shareWhy did they stop working together?
shareSpielberg stopped working with Tom Cruise because he was promoting Scientology on set while they were making War of the Worlds.
shareI heard this rumour but it was never verified. Do you have a source for it?
According to Tom Cruise's former agent he set up a booth on the set of War of the Worlds to promote Scientology:

he is correct but cruise looked uncomfortable, like he was being accost by fantard. it was awkward exchange to watch.
