In comparison Top Gun got 4 noms (won 1 - song)

reply

I don't think it deserves to be nominated for best picture or screenplay, but I don't mind the other noms.

reply

At least they didn't give Tom Cruise one.

reply

wasn't it supposed to get nominated for best cinematography? it won the critic's choice

reply

Good for Joseph Kosinski. He's come a long way since Tron: Legacy.

Much better than all the Oscar bait shit like Fabelmans and Everything

"Best Picture"
Ridiculous.

It might get it for saving the theater industry. They give out awards for weird reasons sometimes.

^this

It was a great film that was universally loved by critics and audiences. If the Hollywood elite don't start to acknowledge this at award ceremonies, their big pay days and caviar dinners could soon come to an end.

The streaming factories can pump out endless shit with underpaid b listers and still make money, due to the built in subscriber audience that will eat up any over hyped movie/series that's been spoon fed to them on social media.

All hope is lost for Hollywood and the Oscars anyways, so I am not sure why I still care about what gets nominated or wins, it has become obscene for years now. However...

Yes, Maverick blew people away, but that doesn't mean "it was a great film". Film is more than the value of entertainment you personally felt while munching down popcorn and if we pretend for a second that the Oscar still has value, there is no way in Hell Maverick should even be nominated (talking "best film" only!).

It was as simple and shallow and error-ridden as any movie can be. Does that make it bad? Not necessarily, but it sure as Hell doesn't justify putting it into the nominee category of best film and if it does, well, good night Oscars, you're now completely off the rocker.

Personally, I fail to see why this movie made everyone lose their shit so much. And no, it's not like I am not into jets or military, on the contrary, it is because I am into these things that I could not stop rolling my eyes over the idiotic script and characters and also completely wrong military stuff.

Top Gun, the original, was a masterpiece that managed to recruit thousands of men (and some women) into the cockpits of Navy and Air Force, while still being a solid film without this "marvel humor" they squish into everything these days, taking itself serious and being serious overall, but not try-hard or cringe.

The conflict portrayed was also highly realistic actually and derived from real life incidents. Meanwhile, the bullshit they pull in the second movie... I do not even know where to begin...

I rated it 3/10, personally, and that also only due to my respect for practical effects and Tom Cruise's constant 100% attitude. The rest? Forgettable modern trash, including the horrible cast. Poor Jennifer Connelly, lol.

Not ridiculous at all. This movie did everything well that movie makers try to accomplish -- script, acting, cinematography, emotion, and amazing stunts, while entertaining a mass audience. That's a lot harder to do than making something clever and arty that appeals to a niche audience.

reply

1 oscars, or any "prize" for art, are complete and utter bullshit.

2 further proof of that is that, as anybody that watches this crapfest should know, they increased the nominations for best picture in the past decade.
So, of course this movie is nominated for best picture, and the original was not, Einstein.

Great! Let it win! I’m okay with that, because this film did a LOT to restore filmgoers’ faith in the industry.

On a side note, I follow the Sight and Sound top ten films of all time. For 2022, #1 was Jeanne Dielmann. Utter nonsense artsy junk that shows how disconnected critics are. That film doesn’t even belong in top #50 of all time!

I’d rewatch Top Gun Maverick anyday over Jeanne….
