This is the basic design of almost all modern fighter aircraft. Designed in the late 1960s through the early 1970s. F14 - F18. Example: The F16's first flight was in 1974.

So the design is even older than you thought. BUT there is nothing like a fighter jet on earth. Nothing comes close. Probably never will in anyone's lifetime who will read this in the next 50 years. PS. I know about drones and rockets.

Technology has improved and changed greatly. The F-18 outperforms the F-14 in every way except for top speed, and the F-35C has a huge advantage with it's stealth. Autonomous drones are another leap forward from the 1980's.
