Pretty sure under the Reich and/or Japan would outlaw Gays...

First half of season 3 they seem to really throw it in in the short scenes per episode which drags on to make it feel like it's longer than it is but I would think they wouldn't allow lesbian/gay stuff under their rule. At least it would fit the alternate universe better but I guess even the diversity quota breaks all barriers.

In the 1960s United States homosexuals were not openly excepted so the neutral zone must be much more open society. Homosexuality could get someone sent to concentration camps in Nazi Germany, not sure the laws in Japan at the time but just guessing world wide at the time it was probably not openly permitted.

reply

They didn't really care about stuff like that in imperial Japan. Traditional Japanese culture is less concerned with private conduct generally than western societies, so long as it remains private, but public displays of affection even between husband and wife are taboo. Homosexuality was actually pretty well accepted since there was no religious element promoting intolerance.

Inspector Kido said to Frank at one point that there really weren't any Jews in Japan so there was no hatred of them either. The laws they passed in the Pacific States out of deference to the Reich weren't considered high priorities for enforcement. Kido admitted that he personally could care less. So I think in the JPS they were basically what a friend of mine likes to call "cop laws" - laws that give the cops an excuse to hassle you when they need one, but otherwise tend to be ignored.

Couldn’t care less... “kido couldn’t care less.” Think about it, if someone could care less means they do care, how do so many people not get this.

(Not having a go at you personally mate)

reply

No, the only way you couldn't care less is if you already don't care at all. :)

reply

The phrase is “couldn’t care less” mate. Honestly.

reply

That's what I said. As long as you still care a little bit, it's possible to care less. Once you don't care at all then - and only then - you really couldn't. No negative caring allowed!

Just being a smartass. Don't mind me.

reply

You American by any chance?

reply

THE PHRASE IS "COULDN'T CARE LESS"!!

GOT IT!?! (fucking yank)

A neutral zone 'must be much more open society?' The one where the bounty hunters hunt renegade Jews for the Nazis. No, I don't think so. The Neutral zone is a cesspool even worse than the flanking regimes combined, although a less organized one. The openness of gay love in the series is yet another example of shoddy writing and poor world-building.

reply

No, the neutral zone is where you go to escape the iron fist of the Nazis. Of course it will be more open and free. If bounty hunters come after you, you can shoot back without repercussions. Try that with all your neighbors watching you in Naziville.

Were there poofters and dykes in the book?

reply

The Reich, yes. Japan, I don't know.

reply

The Reich would (gays were executed in the concentration camps) but I never heard of militarist Japan cracking down on gays or Jews like the Nazis did.

reply

I would say that in Japan things were so controlled that people didn't dare to be anything that challenged the norm.

reply

Regardless of which world or time period a film or tv show is set in it always reflects current attitudes. That is why they tend to be so boring. LGBTIQ in Nazi Germany? I don't think so, wouldn't work in 1950's America either or anywhere else.

reply

You saw the plotline where the one gay character was taken into custody for "re-education", right? Darn skippy it wasn't allowed, they portrayed that.
