Seriously, why so much hate?

There's a hell of a lot of negativity towards this film, I'm just curious why? The people who hate it generally take the reason as it's 'hideous' 'piece of crap' 'boring' 'worst movie ever' and I'm genuinely puzzled as to why?
I loved the movie, deffinately one of the best I've seen this year so far.
Iwth any movie like this, a re-telling, you have to take it with a pinch of salt but I don't find there anything hideously bad about it.
Ok Kristen Stewart isn't Meryl Streep but she isn't awful! I'm by no means her biggest fan by a long shot but she's fine as Snow White. Charlize is fabulous! Looks amazing and there's so much (maybe too much) complaining about her screaming. I don't see what's so wrong about this, the Queen has an icy, heartless exterior and keeps her cool around people. Only when she's alone with her brother does she allow herself to be a screaming nut case, I think that's very right for her character. She's worried for her fate, insecure and a class A psycho! Do you think Madonna doesn't scream the house down when she's alone or when someone else gets to number 1?
I love the atmosphere of this film. A constant feeling that no one's safe and that danger is around every corner, even sanctuary can't protect you. Also the theme that everything considered beautiful is destoryed or turned ugly.

I know this post is probably opening a can of worms and will recieve considerable backlash but these boards just seem to be a hotbed for hate these days. Can't people just enjoy movies anymore. The freedome to voice an opinion has made everyone think they're a critic, and believe me I'm no better but please everyone! Lighten up!

This movie was fab, I love it! And almost everyone I know loved it too? So really, why so much hate? Constructive and civilised answers are prefered please guys, nastiness is unnecessary! Thoughts and opinions???

reply

I think it's the nature of the internet. You can go to any message board for any movie and find the exact same posts.

I think anonymity makes people feel free to say whatever they want without fear of repercussion.

Oh, and you are right. You have opened yourself to a lot of backlash. Brace yourself.

You couldn't guess that based on the trailer? Are you a guy? You went to see Snow White and expected to like it?

reply

The trailer was well done; it had all the trappings of a revisionist take on the fairy tale with plenty or action, nice costumes, and some animation, however the execution of the story itself was mediocre, and to say that it just to be kind.

Allow me to point out that the only prerequisite to enjoy this sorrowful excuse for a film is to like KS; if you like KS you like the film. I never heard of KS until the film was announced and I didn't expect her to be so cold, uncharismatic and dull on the screen. Maybe that was the kind of Snow White Rupert Sanders and KS wanted for this film to attract the Twilight crowd. As he himself put it -- "A million twilight fans won't hurt the film." The film was made with that audience in mind, and therefore not much appreciation outside that crowd should be expected or blamed for not liking it.

SWATH lacks a disclaimer that reads: for fans of KS only, but because there is not such disclaimer, the film is subject to serious bashing for good reasons.

You can't just add the domestic and overseas ticket sales for how much the movie made. The studio gets about 40% of the domestic sales, and less than 10% of the overseas sales. The movie 'made' less than $90 million for the studio, and cost them $170 million (I don't think that includes publicity costs). Money-wise, Universal lost a ton.

I don't think how much money a movie makes reflects whether it was good or not, but those are the (approximate) numbers, if anyone is interested.

reply

I actually like KS and did not like the film.

I'm a guy. Watched it on cable a couple of months ago. The darkness of it is in line with the original story (though not the plot). Wouldn't have been a movie i'd spent cash on a ticket to see, but i didn't hate it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I usually ignore the
negative comments about movies I like. The movie was sumptuous, well-acted and engaging from start to finish. I am a huge Charlize Thearon fan and her performance as Ravenna was campy and entertaining. The costumes she wore were works of art. Snow White and the Huntsman took me on a journey to another world.Lots of other people like the film too. To paraphrase one of our more colorful vice-presidents, nevermind the nattering nabobs of negativity!

reply

Obviously you didn't take seriously any of the criticism regarding this film.

What you call 'constructive and civilised', I call it an euphemism for an invitation to pour more praise and drooling about the film and Ms Stewart. To enjoy this film, one has to be a fan of hers in order to delight on her screen presence. She utters 12 sentences in 2hrs, the rest is silence interrupted by sudden bursts of running from here to there, sorting out obstacles like the average video game.

The ending is laughable, and one of the surviving cliches from the 1940s. It reminds me Nikolai Cherkassov in either Ivan the Terrible or Alexander Nevsky. Whether Stewart is more beautiful than Nikolai Cherkassov is a matter of opinion, although his smile didn't have that mona lisa quality her smile has.

Hemsworth's cameo takes the prize as the shortest, the most enigmatic and useless ever made; it looks and feels like an afterthought because the fantasy film demands a love theme or something along those lines and there is not time left for re-shootings.

Kristen Stewart mentioned that the film was made by a committee, and she was right; it shows. Soviet Film would be proud.

It seems that Rupert Sanders wanted to give the audiences an indie with fairies; he put together all its trappings: grim reality, misery, mental illness, joylessness, and people on a journey. What is missing is the soft porn scene so central to the genre. The PG-13 saved RS for further embarrassment.

The film runs like The Orient Express crossing Europe at full steam. It is so fast that only hours later one comes to realise it is such an empty vessel after all.

Don't know OP. Great post BTW. 'SWATH' is an amazing film IMO and I realize that a lot of people don't feel tha way. For example I know two people from work that were underwhelmed w/the film. But the hate that so many spew out toward the film on the internet is almost incomprehensible to me.

"You can't have my heart."

reply

It isn't about hate, it is about what makes good film narrative. SWAT is not LOTR. You seem to be contented with 'interpreting' the movie so you can easily ignore the rest. When it was released mainstream film magazines didn't waste valuable paper on it. And the only article worth mentioning was about the special effects used to create the mirror-man. This lack of interest is telling.

Those who claim that the film is 'fantastic', 'great', and other terms of fancy, must be a very easy-to-please crowd who enjoy whatever comes out of Hollywood as long as it appeals to the eyes and finishes on time for dinner.

The story is made of scenes that last no more than a few seconds; 45 minutes of dialogue out of 2hrs 7min.; everything else is left to be interpreted and speculated upon by the audience. The editor excelled himself at hacking scenes away even further, dialogue included, leaving some of them unexplicable.

It is made like a commercial, it moves like a video game, and it ends an unfunished product. It has no soul, no character, little originality. But, hey, with Kristen Stewart on board can't fail! Lets not worry about small details like all that borrowing from other films and lack of character development, shall we?LOL.

Pity there isn't a filter to get rid of the repetitive, inane threads by children so us adults don't have to plough through the dross. Please don't tell me there are adults out there hating this actress! They would be very sad indeed.

I watched it last night with friends and their child and we all loved it! I was actually impressed with KS's acting (she is rather wooden in Twilight if truth be told!) so I was pleasantly surprised. Superb, flawless SFX and production values. Ian McShane stole every scene he was in!!!

Hormonal teenagers are PRECISELY Twilight's audience and fanbase, the adults who find those movies appealing are a minority, and they will love Stewart in everything she is in, regardless of the quality (or lack of) her performance.

The rest of us do indeed dislike Twilight (I watched the first one and I was not compeled to watch the rest of the series), They are BAD movies, aimed to please a very specific sort of audience; sure, I am not losing my time trolling the Twilight forums, but if the fact that I detested the first film (and I hear that the series get progressively worse) makes me a "hater", so be it.

Please don't tell me there are adults out there hating this actress! They would be very sad indeed.

The first time I watched the movie on DVD, I thought it was entertaining, but overall mediocre, it got me bored at parts, and it was evident that it was trying too hard to emulate movies such as Willow, Lord of the Rings, and Legend; but without the charm of these films. So I gave it a 4/10.

However, I watched it a second time, but now in Blu Ray, which made the experience much better; for some reason I thought it was too dark on DVD, in Blu Ray I could appreciate better the art direction the SFX, and the production values you speak of.

Sure, the movie still tries to emulate those films I mentioned, but I could notice this second time that at least it succeeds in some aspects, the fairy tale atmosphere is quite good in some scenes, the scenarios, environment and the mythology around it is not so bad, in fact it becomes an enjoyable film. Being objective, a 6/10 would be a fair ranking.

At the end of the day the film has more positive elements than negative ones, it will never be a cinematographic jewel, but it is a rather fun and enjoyable movie which fulfills its purpose of entertaining.

However, also objectively speaking there are some negative aspects on it too, ultimately I gave it a 6, which is far from a 10, but of course, it is even more distanced from a 1.

Snow White going into battle with that army looks silly, and the armors and shields are too Lord of the Rings, complete with Gondor's white tree as an emblem, there is lack of character development, if the producers had followed closer the real story, there wouldn't have been any need to do that silly battle scene and the time spent to do that senseless war would have been used to deliver better characters.

Also, sorry to say it, but Stewart IS wooden in this movie, her personality (or lack of) and charisma is practically non existant, she is cold and emotionless, I was even joking with my brother and his girlfriend about the coronation scene and she being all serious by saying: Hey! Didn't she get the memo telling her that they actually won and life is good again? She rarely ever smiles and her lack of emotions would make any poker player envy her greatly.

Another thing that is absurd is that this Snow White is supposed to be more beautiful than the queen, sorry but in what realistic universe is Stewart remotely prettier than Theron? It is clear that one of the two actresses (or both for that matter) is miscast.

Stewart is attractive, I'll give you that, and in this movie probably she looks prettier than the other movies she has been into (Adventureland, Into the Wild, Twilight, Speak, The Panic Room, etc.), but not nearly as beautiful as Theron, and her performance does not help her, I don't know about the rest of people, but at least on my personal taste, I think that personality and charisma make a woman look even more beautiful, and Stewart has none of them, it is ALWAYS the same performance in every role I've seen her: Cold, distant, uptight, emotionless, uncharismatic, and with the same facial gesture the whole time, as if she has been terribly constipated for days.

An actor is supposed to transmit and represent different feelings and moods, an actor is supposed to look natural, she always looks stressed, worried, bitter, rigid so needless to say she fails in those aspects, she IS absolutely wooden.

So yeah, while I enjoyed my second viewing of the film much better than the first time, and I am not the sort of person who says: "Oh! Stewart is in this film, then I wont watch it!", I have not yet found a movie in which she actually makes me like (let alone love) her character, needless to say I do indeed consider her a bad actress who admitedely has managed to be in a couple of interesting movies (Adventureland and Into the Wild), but became famous for an extremely mediocre series in which hormonal teens almost made a cult around her.

Perhaps you should come up with better arguments in defense of the film other than crying 'haters ahoy!' and accuse others of being immature or inaccurate because for some outer space reason you found the film enjoyable.

When asked why is it that Ms Stewart decided to play Snow White like a medieval version of Bella Swan, particularly in the Snow White awakening scene?

The answer is:
Swath is an indie movie with an overblown budget made to satisfy the taste of the Twilight audiences and the KS fan club, therefore it's only natural to conclude that being a part of that audience is a requisite to enjoy this film. As a matter of fact they are the only ones who want a sequel.

As Rupert Sanders said: 'one million twilight fans can't hurt the film.' I think he knew what he was talking about.

Interesting, as I am neither. With so many series in the TV, you cannot watch all, and I have hardly watched the Twilight, so I have no real conception of her acting. Neither am I a fan of KS, I guess I just like films with action, special effects, scenery, fairy tale subjects. I know that is shallow, lol.

I did not expect Oscar quality acting and maybe my requirements are low, but I accepted Snow White as a person the way she played her. Usually I am bothered by people having their mouth open too often so it is strange that I did not notice Stewart doing that , like people say. Perhaps as I watched it on TV.

Actually this was the second time I watched it. Wondering what to watch, I came first to the second X-men movie, for some reason did not feel like watching it again, and was happy to find Snow White. Perhaps it needed less brain power.

What does it say about me that one of the most enjoyable parts was the stare competition with the troll, as it showed she was brave. Whoever designed the troll, was a genius, all those teeth, lol.

Easy answer. Almost all of them are insecure people, in general jealous of the success others may have had, and one of their ways of making themselves feel good is to criticize something successful. If you have the time and interest click on the user name of one of those "haters" and read a few posts they made on other movies, you will see which ones are the habitual haters, it is their way of trying to cope with their own feelings of lack of accomplishment.

> I'm genuinely puzzled as to why?

To me, the problem with the whole movie is that it didn't feel like a well-thought-out story, but rather a "best of" collection of everything that the writers thought worked well from hundreds of other modern fairy tales (murdered parent, evil armies, female crusader, reluctant hero, etc.). But also, they had a checklist of major points that had to be taken from the original Snow White stories (evil queen, magic mirror, poisoned apple, singing dwarves, etc.).

So, the whole movie just felt like random pieces and parts just strung together. It was like the movie was assembled in a factory. There was just no emotion to it.

The only people who might like it are the people that don't think about the movie. They just see a princess defeat an evil queen and then they clap and giggle madly.

That's just wrong. You've made up a negative fantasy about what people would enjoy the movie, and you're ignoring the reasons real people do like the movie.

It looks great, it sounds great, it's got some nice acting (thanks Charlize!), it has enough biffing for the boys and romance for the girls and magic for both, and it's reasonably edifying, not corrupting trash.

It could have been better, and (for example) Lord of the Rings obviously is better; but it could have been worse too, and many, many movies are.

Yes! That is exactly my point. You don't say that the whole movie was good or that the script created an amazing story. You were only able to point to some of the various pieces that you liked. Yeah, it had good CGI and wasn't offensive.

The movie was a collection of parts that weren't put together very well.

That's like looking at a new car and saying, "Well, I liked the steering wheel, the back seat was comfortable, and the bumpers were very shiny."

Now I remember why real people go to the movies: biffing for the boys, romance for the girls, magic, and spiritual solace.

Why not saying it once and for all? The fact is that SWATH is one of the greatest musicals we have seen on the screen. There! The naked truth.

Romance in SWATH smells and tastes like stale bread, that mouldy. There is not sex or kisses, that is fine. Not fairy tale happy ending with sparkling champagne either, that's fine. The Middle Ages never looked so monochrome in technicolor and Panavision.

There is only one set back, according to many. A distasteful, disturbingly corrupting element that brings the otherwise good story to its knees: the Lord's Prayer. Fortunately, the blue ray version has corrected this vicious thing and silenced it for posterity. For that extra little something, don't miss the director's commentary.

What?

reply

Yes, David Blue. Your 'great film' has been censored in the blue ray. They silenced The Lords Prayer because those who adore the film find it out of place, but feel warm and fuzzy inside about an elk and pagan rituals.

reply

That's beneath pathetic.

This is a key moment when the character shows who she is. And she doesn't get a lot of those.

It's as though you censored the key moment at the end of Dirty Harry where he throws his badge away. There goes the point of the character.

Snow White makes sense because she fits within a medieval, supernatural world view. Within, as in under God. She acknowledges Jesus, and the stag acknowledges her. There is a hierarchy, ultimately held together by Jesus, and everyone has a place in it. This is the medieval mentality.

She's not above and outside that order. She's not Japanese or a 21st Century secular multicultural whatever. Except in the Blu-Ray I guess.

They threw away the best thing about the film.

reply

How many movies do you see where the background is medieval and the characters have proper attitudes for the era? Very few. Normally they talk Hollywood nonsense about being rebels for freedom or something, which in the medieval mindset would be nonsense, treason or both. All sorts of "respectable" movies are like this, including Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood. Even "historicals" like The Messenger / Joan of Arc got the essentials horribly wrong.

Snow White and the Huntsman was different and superior, because for all its MTV show it played by the rules. Snow White and the Huntsman may love each other, but jokes aside he's never going to get anything more than a smile, because he is a commoner. Can Snow White command the army? Yes, she's the legitimate heir to the throne. Can she command supernatural powers? Possibly, but she must acknowledge Jesus, otherwise she'd necessarily be an agent of the Devil. (As Ravenna is: magic, no prayers, case closed.)

Snow White and the Huntsman is not over-the-top soaked in "medieval" atmosphere like Name of the Rose. But it was up there in getting the essentials right.

reply

David,

I am totally, absolutely, and completely with you on this issue.

You didn't understand my point.

Some people criticised the use of the Lord's Prayer because they believe that Christianity is out of place in a fantasy film; some went as far as feeling offended by it.

To say that Christianity is out of place in a medieval setting is like saying that the Colisseum is out of place in a film about Imperial Rome.

While in the blue ray the prayer has been muted, paganism was kept intact, and it looks like paganism has more legitimacy because it is 'natural', or is the religion of 'the other'.

Snow White couldn't be 'just a Christian'; her legitimacy depended on being crowned by the church. Political correctness can go just that far and Rupert Sanders introduced the Lord's Prayer, not because it is part of the cultural setting, but because it has nothing else to give Kristen Stewart to do, as he said: 'You can just recite the Lord's Prayer.' And this put another nail in the coffin of this movie.

I agree with you on the importance of the cultural reference in a medieval setting. Thank you very much for your comments.

reply

yeah like in THE MESSENGER, where you might likely hear a "Fer shure, dude, like totally awesome!" in the dialog lol

reply

This is a key moment when the character shows who she is. And she doesn't get a lot of those.

What was in the earlier quote : "corrupting element" "vicious thing". I do not even know what that means?
Maybe because I say the Lord's Prayer most Sundays and think of it a natural thing to say. What makes it so "vicious" even if one does not believe in God?

There are naturally different opinions as there are different persons with different expectations and tastes, I only do not understand why some want to say nasty things about others? I don't think I have felt the need to do that.
