Why is it...

...that almost all coming-of-age films seem to focus on young boys? What about girls? As far I can think right now, few, if any, such films seem to have a girl as the focus. Can anyone name any? I really felt for Duncan, as I was the introverted type of teen, and am still that way as an adult. And yes, I am a woman. And I really loved this film.

I hope within the 5 pages of this thread that someone answered "because girls have cooties." That's the best answer. At least that's what a pimply-faced boy with horse poo breath told me.

Don't know how old you are, but when you get to be about 20 or older, try "The Story of O." That's a kind of coming of age story.

As a father of two girls, I came here with the same observation and I'm glad to see a few movie suggestions which I plan to follow up on.

I would add Ginger Snaps (2000) to the list. Although it is a horror/comedy, it is also very much a coming-of-age story and a fantastic one at that.

There are plenty of coming-of-age flicks involving females, try "Swimming" (2000), which is similar in vibe to this film and takes place at Myrtle Beach, although the girl is older than Duncan, like 18 or so: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202711/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_10

It might not be as good as this one, but it's a worthy Indie flick.
