Good and bad elements

Good
- Quaid and Miller’s performances were good
- Large cast and nice sets for a low-budget flick

Bad
- kinda schmaltzy
- too much focus on Reagan’s religiosity; felt like obvious pandering to religious conservatives
- overstates Reagan’s role in the fall of Soviet Union
- too much focus on Ron and Nancy’s relationship

Overall, seemed like a made-for-tv movie that had a generous budget. Only good for Reagan fans.

It does have the feel of a made-for-TV movie to some extent. But I also think it has the feel of a movie that you’d play at the Republican National Convention or at the Reagan Presidential Museum in California . And that’s OK if you like Reagan. But if someone doesn’t already adore Reagan, then I don’t think this movie is meant for him/her

reply

Yes, the movie idealized its subject.

reply

Quaid did okay but he was still a miscast.

reply

Because he didn’t look the part or he couldn’t capture Reagan’s mannerisms and/or voice?

reply

Didn't look the part and didn't have the slight snarkiness of Reagan.

reply

I think they cast Quaid at least as much for his acting ability and name recognition as for his physical resemblance to Reagan.

reply

He was very poorly directed. He's a good actor but his dialogue was straight from a Dhar Mann episode and the direction isn't much different from that either.
