Regarding the ending.

First off I would like to declare I havent read the book (which doesnt mean I have no intentions to) and just saw the film the other day. By the end, do you think Aimee embraces Sutter again? I mean do you think she gives him a chance or just rejects him? That ending was kind of a cliffhanger, wasnt it? Please, share with me your opinions.

I think it could really go either way. In my mind, she has a new boyfriend, and she and Sutter go forward as friends.

I want them to carry on as they was, you know young "true" love and all that, but she seemed kinda smart yet so enticed by him! She said to him "you're the most important thing" after the crash.. I think he learnt by the end of the movie & I like to think she still felt the same and he'd learnt to accept to himself he should and could be loved in such a way!

In my opinion they just put that scene in there to keep people happy. Because the main thrust of the film was about the change in the way he saw the world because of her influence. And so it doesn't really matter what happens in the end because the important message is about the way the main character sees his life in regards to living in the now rather than planning.

Has anyone read the book. I plan to, but I read a lot, so if someone knows the "true" ending, please put it down. I think he got her back, after a huge conversation. Or, at least, I hope he did. Great little film. Someone said it was like, "Say Anything", not even close in regards to the story. Horrible review. I liked the film, to be clear. Many thanks.

I've read all the various topics regarding the ending, and decided to post my theories here..
so, regarding that final scene as Sutter approaches Aimee..

...I believe she is understandably conflicted..I think she believes she really loved/loves him, but being away from home and that situation, and her newfound college introduction is already starting to broaden the way she sees her life, including her own potential....if it had been a longer period, her decision would be harder, but due the short amount of time, I believe she accepts him and is open to take up basically close to the way they left off...

..now, Sutter...I would really hope that the whole movie wasn't a waste as far as Sutter really learning something from his friendship/relationship with Aimee, and finally reconciling his unresolved feelings about his mom and who his dad really was...plus facing some harsh facts about himself...so, regardless of Aimee being in love with him, he just wasn't "in love" with her..even if he had grown to love her in his own way...no doubt he did care about her and he learned so much from her, he also respected and admired her....but, even if he wished he would have loved her romantically, he just didn't...and clearly several times right up until that final goodbye with Cassidy at graduation, you could tell where his true romantic feelings were every time he though about her, and the way he looked at her...so, what I hope happened after that final scene we see on-screen is this...he decided to be man enough to come congratulate her and thank her for everything in person, and how much her friendship had meant to him..but also tell her that he still had a lot of growing up to do and had to find his own path..but he hoped they would stay in touch and he knew that she would be successful and realize her dreams...she may be a little sad at first, but I think she would be able to move on faster than she may realize at that moment, and it would truly be the best for both of them in the long run, and I would like the think that's what happened that we didn't get to see....

I believe she accepts him back.

The ending was terrible. This movie had no need for a classic romantic cliffhanger. This movie was not about the romance. It was about the individual's journey with the help of a romance. It is absolutely ridiculous that they left their romantic future open for interpretation.
